NEWTON -- Alice Ethel Garris, 93, of Newton, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, at Newton Medical Center.

Born and raised in Franklin, Alice moved to Newton 50 years ago. She and her late husband were stationed in Kane'ohe Bay, Hawaii; Parris Island, S.C.; Miramar, Calif.; El Toro, Calif.; Patuxent River, Md.; Cherry Point, N.C.; and Atlantic City before moving to Newton.

Alice worked as a personal lines underwriter for Selective Insurance Company of America for 17 years before her retirement in 1990. She was a member of Newton Memorial Post 5360 VFW Ladies Auxiliary and St. Joseph R.C. Church in Newton.

The daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Such) Christian, Alice was also predeceased by her husband, 1st Sgt. Russell N. Garris, USMC, Retired (Dec. 25, 2000); her daughter, Lynne Garris-Sheldon (1988); her son-in-law, Miles Sheldon (2011); and her longtime companion, Dr. Gerald Feldman, O.D. (May 20, 2017).

Alice is survived by her daughter, Janice Duggins and husband, Maj. James Duggins, of North Las Vegas, Nev.; her granddaughters, Courtney Sheldon, of Newton, and Alison Gosiak, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; her grandson, Mark Gerczak, of North Richland Hills, Texas; her brother, Frank Christian, of Lake Hopatcong; her sister, Betty Kolczynski, of Inverness, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Jean Garris, of Newton; and her five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her longtime friends, Pat and Jeff Feldman.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at St. Joseph Cemetery in Newton.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.
