Evelyn Henstrand Obituary
HACKETTSTOWN - Evelyn Henstrand died July 8, at home. She was 97.
Mrs. Henstrand was born in Lanchester, Durham, England and grew up in Newcastle-on-Tyne. After she lost most of her family during a German air raid in April 1941, she moved with her disabled father to Whitley Bay where she met her future husband, Oke Henstrand, who was stationed there with the U.S. Coast Guard and fought in the Normandy Invasion.
After the war, Evelyn traveled to New York on the ocean liner "The Gripsholm" and arrived in May 1946. She married Oke on June 1 and they raised three children. Mrs. Henstrand was a member of the Greatest Generation and showed strength and courage in World War II and throughout her life, she contributed to her adopted country - the U.S.A. She also resided in Randolph and Coral Springs, Fla., before moving to Paragon Village 13 years ago.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Henstrand, PhD. (and Peter Kiessling, M.D.), of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two sons, Col. Raymond Henstrand, U.S.A., retired, (and Linda), of Hopatcong, and Scott Henstrand (and Beth Ruck), of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her grandson, Tim Henstrand; and granddaughter, Owen Ruck.
Visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday, July 16, immediately followed by a funeral service at noon., at Morgan Funeral Home, 31 Main St., Netcong. Interment at Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows.
