James Gerald Scales Sr. Obituary
STILLWATER -- James Gerald Scales Sr., 90 years old, of the Paulinskill Lake section of Stillwater, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018. A first-generation Irish American, Jim was born to Mary (Logan) and Peter Scales in Orange

Dec. 31, 1927. He moved to Paulinskill Lake, where he built his home and raised his family.

Jim was a member of the New Jersey Carpenters Local 349 for 45 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and could be found on numerous lakes, streams and hunting grounds throughout Sussex County. Jim also had the opportunity to hunt and fish in Colorado and Alaska with his son. Being involved in AA for nearly 60 years, he helped many people change their lives through their recovery.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Judy. He is also survived by his children, Barbara Phillips, Jim Scales Jr., and his wife, Brenda, Janice Grzesik and her husband, Richard Grzesik Jr., Laura McDonnell and her husband, Andrew, and Julia Scales; his six grandchildren, Jeri, Dustin, Richie Paul, Mary, Kelly and Katie; and six great-grandchildren, Makayla, Austin, Zoe, Abby, Paul and Anna. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Maloney, and was predeceased by his sister, Ann McManus.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at

10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 203 Swartswood Road, Swartswood. Interment will follow at the Bevans Cemetery, 7 Walpack Road (Sandyston Township), Layton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in memory of James G. Scales Sr. to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, 99 Sparta Ave., Newton, NJ 07860 or AA General Service Office, Box 459, Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163.
