Robert L "Bob" Purdue Sr. Obituary
HAMBURG - Robert "Bob" L. Purdue Sr., 90, of Hamburg, formerly of Kinnelon, passed away on Jan. 2.
Born in Newark, Bob grew up in Newark and Belleville. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 after turning down an invitation to the Boston Red Sox training camp. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and enrolled in Seton Hall University where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education in 1950 and 1958, respectively. Bob enjoyed the greatest part of his career as an elementary school teacher in Wyckoff. In addition to forming young minds as a teacher, Bob shaped the character of young men for more than 25 years as a baseball, basketball and soccer coach at Neumann Prep High School in Wayne. He was an avid sports fan who especially loved the New York Yankees.
Bob's love of sports was only surpassed by his love for his beloved wife, Rosemary, his children and grandchildren. Bob and Rosemary shared 61 wonderful years before her death in 2014. Bob is survived by his loving children, Robert L. Purdue Jr., of Morristown, Jeanne Hantson and her husband, Thomas, of Oak Ridge, Richard E. Purdue, of Clayton, Calif., Donna L. Purdue, of Lake Hopatcong, William T. Purdue and his wife, Nancy, of Wrentham, Mass., J. Michael Purdue, of Hopatcong, and Stephen P. Purdue and his wife, Kate, of Bangor, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his brother, Russell Purdue, of Belleville.
A funeral Mass will be held at noon, on Friday, Jan. 5, at Our Lady of the Magnificat R.C. Church, Kinnelon. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. www.scanlanfuneral.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert's memory to or would be greatly appreciated by his family.
