Leona Margaret (Panerio) Malcolm January 23, 1933 - September 4, 2022 Leona Margaret (Panerio) Malcolm passed away on September 4, 2022, in South Cle Elum, Washington. She was born on January 23, 1933, in Roslyn, Washington, to Major and Margaret (Hunter) Panerio. Leona was born and raised in Roslyn where she attended school K-8. She graduated from Cle Elum High School in 1951 and furthered her education at Central Washington State College (CWU) where she earned a BA in Elementary Education and Music Education. While at Central, Leona was a member of the Central Swingers Choir performing around the United States. This experience was one of her fondest memories while attending college in Ellensburg. It was at Central that Leona met and married Don Malcolm. Don and Leona moved to Renton in 1955 where Leona started her education career teaching 3rd Grade. In 1957, Don and Leona started their family. Over the course of the next 12 years, they had four children, Tami, Doug, Scott and Lisa. During this time, they lived in Bellevue, Washington, McClain, Virginia, and Santa Barbara, California. It was in 1972, that Leona decided to move to Roslyn, Washington with her children to create a new life. She was hired by the Cle Elum-Roslyn School District in 1972 teaching first and third grade before being approached by her principal to start her career as the elementary music director. During this time, Leona taught and instilled a love of music to countless students over her 24-year career. Leona was known for her memorable Christmas and Spring concerts where she put on full musicals spanning a variety of genres. She retired in 1996 to start her new chapter as a full-time grandma. Leona was fortunate to have 10 grandchildren and loved watching them succeed at school and their extracurricular activities. You could find her at the field, gym, pool, and track cheering them on. If you asked her what her greatest achievement in life was, she would say her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Leona was also a member of Eastern Star, PEO, Sons of Italy, Mountain Voices Community Choir and St. John the Baptist Church. She spent over 20 years as the choir director at St. Johns.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Major and Margaret Panerio, her brother "Beep" and his wife Charlotte Panerio, brother Chuck Panerio, his wife Helen and nephew Tony. Aunt & Uncle Clara (Hunter) and Emile Fera and cousin Gail Fera Juris. She is survived by her children Tami and (Jim) Schunzel of South Prairie, Doug and (Sandy) Malcolm of Cle Elum, Scott and (Katherine) Malcolm of Ellensburg, Lisa and (Rob) Moffat of Cle Elum; grandchildren, Sara and (Luke) Michener, Monica and Rachael Malcolm, Jessica and (Tony) Gunderson, Tyler Schunzel, Karly and (Brody) Kastning, Kassidy Malcolm, Madison and (Michael) McKeown, Major and Molly Moffat; great grandchildren, Miles and Brooks Michener and Mason Gunderson. Madilynn Gunderson will be arriving soon. Nieces Deona (Bob) Behrens and Krista (Justin) Moody, great Nephews Beau and Chase Behrens, nephew Bob and (Coleen) Panerio, great nephews Bobby and (Lucindy) Panerio and their daughter Luna, and Emile Panerio, cousins Stu (Kathy) Juris, Craig and (Angela) Juris and their son Billy, Patricia Hunter and Kathy Crocket.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00, St. John's the Baptist Church, Saturday, September 17, 2022. Graveside services will be at the Roslyn Cemetery Memorial Gardens immediately after mass followed by a Celebration of Life at the Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary Gym and Multipurpose room from 1:00-4:00.
