Joyce Day

Cold Spring - Joyce L. Day, 83, of Cold Spring, passed away on January 12, 2019 at her home, surrounded by loved ones. Born on October 14, 1935 the only child of Marion Edward Roettger and Edna Doretta (Hecker) Roettger, Joyce grew up in Dayton, Ky where she lived until she graduated from Dayton HS in 1953, and married Donald Leo Day of Newport, Ky in 1954. Joyce and Don met at Salem UMC in Newport, Ky where both were members since birth and childhood. They lived in Bellevue, Ky after their marriage, until 1959, when they purchased a home in Ft. Thomas. Joyce and Don lived and raised their 3 children in Ft. Thomas, until moving to Cold Spring in 2005. Theirs was a special loving marriage of 64 years that lasted until Don's death in May 2018. Joyce was member of the Gertrude Chapter of the OES (Order of the Eastern Star) in Ft. Thomas where she served in various capacities for many years. She was a woman of deep and true faith in God. Joyce worked as the Secretary at Holly Hill Children's home for 20 years. She loved working there and interacting with the children. She would also help in the kitchen, if needed, as she loved to cook. She was very involved in her 3 children's lives and was a Cub Scout Den Leader and the Leader of a Girl Scout Troop for 12 years, keeping her troop intact from Brownies through Senior Scouts, when the girls graduated from Highlands HS in 1975. She was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the vocal choir and various church circles at Salem UMC in Newport, and then at Highland UMC in Ft. Thomas. She was also a member of the Bell Choir at Highland UMC. Prior to moving to Cold Spring, Don and Joyce transferred their membership to Asbury UMC in Highland Heights, where she continued to be involved in various church circles and the vocal and bell choirs. Don and Joyce enjoyed a long and wonderful retired life starting in 1989. They bought an RV and traveled the US for over 5 years, visiting almost all 50 states and spending winters in Florida. Joyce enjoyed camping, hiking and exploring our natural world. In 1995, they purchased a home in Florida where they continued to enjoy the beautiful weather every winter, until their health started failing in 2014. Joyce was a very active member of the Gulf Cove UMC in Gulf Cove, FL during the years that they spent winters in Florida. Joyce had many interests including reading mysteries, shopping, prowling thrift stores for treasures, sewing and many different types of crafts. She also loved to cook and bake and was exceptional at both! Joyce loved all animals but especially dogs, and she had 5 special dogs in her life. She loved Christmas, it was her favorite time of the year. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Donald L Day.
