Cincinnati - Thomas Donald Heekin

On Friday night, August 3, 2018, Tom Heekin left this earth for the big ranch in the sky at the age of 80. He was born in Cincinnati in 1937 to James Robson Heekin and Alice Peters Heekin. Tom led a superlative life of service to our community. He will be greatly missed for his kindness, hard work, wise counsel, calm leadership, Irish sense of humor, and his deep commitment to his family, friends and colleagues. He graduated from Williams College in 1959, with honors. He received his law degree in 1962 from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a member of the Michigan Law Review. Tom then joined the law firm of Taft, Stettinius and Hollister. In 1969, Tom left Taft to serve as a Hamilton County Municipal Court and Common Pleas Court Judge, and then re-joined Taft in 1978. He remained a partner with Taft for the balance of his distinguished career, ultimately serving as the firm's Managing Partner from 1999 until his retirement in 2006. Tom was a long-time leader in the Cincinnati community. He served as President of the Cincinnati Bar Association, and chaired and served on many corporate and nonprofit boards, including the Southwest Ohio Council on Alcoholism, Cincinnati Arts Association, Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund, Cincinnati Musical Festival Association, Messer Construction, United Way, the Leadership Cincinnati Steering Committee, U.C. Economic Center Board of Trustees, U.C. Cancer Institute Committee and the Hamilton County Public Defender Commission. If Tom's calling was the law, his passion was the American West. If he had not been an attorney, he would have been a cowboy. He spent his summers with his wife and family fishing, chopping wood, and exploring the wild beauty of his Last Best Place, Montana. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Lucinda Heekin, son Tom Heekin Jr., son Christopher Heekin and his wife, Beata Heekin, son Patrick Heekin and his wife, Caroline Heekin, his daughter Mary Heekin Fine and her husband, Dr. Andrew Fine, his daughter Alexandra Heekin, his nine grandsons, Alec Heekin, Connor Heekin, Sixten Heekin, Justus Heekin, Axel Heekin, William Heekin, Henry Heekin, Harry Fine and granddaughter, Eva Heekin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018, 9:30 A.M. at Saint Rose Church, 2501 Riverside Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. Private family interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Catholic Inner City School Education Fund (CISE) www.catholiccincinnati.org, or the U.C. Cancer Institute at U.C. Foundation, P.O. Box 19970, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219-0970. Online condolences can be expressed at www.rohdefuneral.com
