Donald Harter Obituary

Donald Stanley Harter passed away Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 at the age of 82. Don was born on August 4th, 1933 in New Orleans to William (Bill) Harter and Irma Rider Harter. Don proudly played football and baseball for the Jesuit Blue Jays. He was also a member of the 1950 City and State championship baseball teams. Mr. Harter also played semi-pro baseball which took him across much of the country. Then he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp as a demolitions expert. Don spent half his time blowing up old ordinance and the other half playing baseball for the Marine Corp! Don lived most of his life in Covington and the surrounding area. Hunting and fishing were also his passion. As a young man and avid outdoorsman in Mandeville in the 1960s, he wrote a hunting and fishing column for "The Bataam". Many of the old time fishermen and hunters were outdone because he gave away their secret areas of fish and game! Mr. Harter also loved horses. He established Holly Hill Stables in Abita Springs. Don and his children rode hunters and jumpers. Many of their friends kept their horses at the stables. This led Don also to play polo which he loved the best. He was always a fierce competitor in anything he tried. In later years, he became a ranger, known as "Old Don "on the Beau Chene Golf Course. He not only learned another sport (golf), but he fished the ponds of the subdivision. Don taught many a man how to fly fish and kayak. Don is survived by his children Anne Harter Brandt (Jeb) of Covington, Susan Harter Dennis (Robert) of Ponchatoula, and John C. Harter (Christina) of Omaha, NE. He is also survived by his devoted brother and sister-in-law, William (Billy) and Elsie Harter of Picayune, MS; grandchildren, Brian J. Brandt (Casey) of Covington, Tara Alford Efferson (Hunter) of Robert, Christian and Seth Harter of Omaha, NE. Great- grandchildren, Presleigh and Ali Brandt and Corina Moraru. All funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Mr. Harter to be made to the charity of your choice. E.J. Fielding Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Please sign the E.J. Fielding Funeral Home online Guest Book at www.ejfieldingfh.com.
