Patti Page Obituary

Sang 'Tennessee Waltz,'

'Doggie in the Window'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Unforgettable songs including "Tennessee Waltz" and "(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window?" made Patti Page the best-selling female singer of the 1950s and a star who would spend much of the rest of her life traveling the world.

When unspecified health problems finally stopped her decades of touring, though, Ms. Page wrote a sad-but-resolute letter to her fans late last year about the change.

"Although I feel I still have the voice God gave me, physical impairments are preventing me from using that voice as I had for so many years," she wrote. "It is only He who knows what the future holds."

Ms. Page died on New Year's Day in Encinitas, Calif., said publicist Schatzi Hageman, ending one of pop music's most diverse careers. She was 85 and just five weeks away from being honored at the Grammy Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy.

Ms. Page achieved several career milestones in American pop culture, but she will be remembered for indelible hits that crossed the artificial categorizations of music and remained atop the charts for months to reach a truly national audience.

"Tennessee Waltz" scored the rare achievement of reaching No. 1 on the pop, country and R&B charts simultaneously and was officially adopted as one of two official songs by the state of Tennessee. Its reach was so powerful, six other artists reached the charts the following year with covers.

Two other hits, "I Went to Your Wedding" and "Doggie in the Window," which had a second life for decades as a children's song, each spent more than two months at No. 1.

Other hits included "Mockin' Bird Hill," "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte," and "Allegheny Moon." She teamed with George Jones on "You Never Looked That Good When You Were Mine."

"I just loved singing with Patti, and she hit notes I never dreamed of," Jones said Wednesday in an email to The Associated Press. "We cut some songs together and it was a great time. She'll be missed by lots of folks, and everybody needs to know how great she was. Patti was a wonderful singer with a real special voice."

TV programs on 3 networks

The voice was so special that Page managed to maintain her career when most singers of her generation and their more innocent songs were shoved aside by the swinging hips of Elvis Presley. Page proved herself something of a match for the nascent rock-and-roll crowd and its obsession with sex, continuing to place songs on the charts into the 1960s.

Ms. Page never kept track, but she was told late in life that she had recorded more than 1,000 songs. That's not what she had in her mind growing up as young Clara Ann Fowler.

"I was a kid from Oklahoma who never wanted to be a singer but was told I could sing," she said in a 1999 interview. "And things snowballed."

She was popular in pop music and country and became the first singer to have television programs on all three major networks, including "The Patti Page Show" on ABC.

In films, Ms. Page co-starred with Burt Lancaster in his Oscar-winning characterization of "Elmer Gantry," and she appeared in "Dondi" with David Janssen and in "Boy's Night Out" with James Garner and Kim Novak.

She also starred onstage in the musical comedy "Annie Get Your Gun." Her death came just a few days after the conclusion of the run of "Flipside: The Patti Page Story," an off-Broadway musical commemorating her life.

In 1999, after 51 years of performing, Ms. Page won her first Grammy for traditional pop vocal performance for "Live at Carnegie Hall The 50th Anniversary Concert."

Page was planning to attend a special ceremony on Feb. 9 in Los Angeles where she was to receive a lifetime achievement award from The Recording Academy.

One of 11 children

Neil Portnow, the Academy's president and CEO, said he spoke with Page and she had been "grateful and excited" to receive the honor. "Our industry has lost a remarkable talent and a true gift, and our sincere condolences go out to her family, friends and fans who were inspired by her work."

Ms. Page was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Claremore, Okla. The family of three boys and eight girls moved a few years later to nearby Tulsa.

She got her stage name working at radio station KTUL, which had a 15-minute program sponsored by Page Milk Co. The regular Patti Page singer left and was replaced by Fowler, who took the name with her on the road to stardom.

Ms. Page was discovered by Jack Rael, a bandleader who was making a stop in Tulsa in 1946 when he heard her sing on the radio. Rael called KTUL asking where the broadcast originated. When told Ms. Page was a local singer, he quickly arranged an interview and abandoned his career to be her manager.

A year later she signed a contract with Mercury Records and began appearing in nightclubs in the Chicago area.

Her first major hit was "With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming," but she got noticed a few years earlier in 1947 with "Confess."

She created a distinctive sound for the music industry on that song by overdubbing her own voice when she didn't have enough money to hire backup singers for the single.

"We would have to pay for all those expenses because Mercury felt that I had not as yet received any national recognition that would merit Mercury paying for it," Page once said.

"Confess" was enough of a hit that Rael persuaded Mercury to let Page try full four-part harmony by overdubbing. The result was "With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming." The label read, "Vocals by Patti Page, Patti Page, Patti Page and Patti Page." was a fluke.

Because Christmas was approaching, Mercury Records wanted Page to record "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" in 1950.

Page and Rael got hold of "Tennessee Waltz," convinced that a pop artist could make a smash hit out of it. Mercury agreed to put it on the B-side of the Christmas song.

"Mercury wanted to concentrate on a Christmas song and they didn't want anything with much merit on the flip side," Page said. "They didn't want any disc jockeys to turn the Christmas record over. The title of that great Christmas song was 'Boogie Woogie Santa Claus,' and no one ever heard of it."

"Tennessee Waltz" became the first pop tune that crossed over into a big country hit.

The waltz "Tennessee Waltz," her biggest-selling record, was on the charts for 30 weeks, 12 of them in the top 10, and eventually sold more than 10 million copies, behind only "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby at the time.

She received the Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music in 1980. She is a member of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.

In her later career, Ms. Page and husband Jerry Filiciotto spent half the year living in Southern California and half in an 1830s farmhouse in New Hampshire. He died in 2009.

Ms. Page is survived by her son, Daniel O'Curran, daughter Kathleen Ginn and sister Peggy Layton.

Patti, you had the most beautiful voice of all the singers in your era. I especially loved "Old Cape Cod". You were sitting directly behind me one year at midnight mass on Christmas Eve. I kept hearing this beautiful voice when we were singing the carols but, I was so engrossed (during the peace segment) with shaking hands with my neighbors in the row in front of me, that I didn't turn around to shake your hand. It wasn't until the next day that my neighbor told me who was directly behind me. I have always regretted that I didn't turn around. Rest in Peace, Patti, and I hope to hear you sing again someday!

To all the family of Mrs. Page you have my deepest sympathy for your loss. I grew up listing to the songs mentioned. That was a time when music was good and innocent. Mrs. Page will always be remembered for introducing them to the world. May the family remember all of the fun memories. Please rely upon the comfort that only God can give.

I served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 thru 1954, and Patti Page was always a favorite of mine. I remember as a teenager when she came out with Confess, With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming and so many more. I did get a chance to see Patti back in the early 80's when she appeared in Hackensack, NJ as she came out into the audience I had a chance to say "Miss Page you were always my favorite." I know she must be entertaining God, the Saints and all the Angels in Heaven. Jack Joyce Spring Hill, Fl

I wrote this poem and gave it to her on April 28th 2010 when she was at charity benefit in Claremore Oklahoma this was my first time to see her so that night I brought her this poem
The Stars had to be lined up just right that night and the sun must have been shinning so bright that day
In some way on that day God sent an angel with a heavenly voice to fill our ears and he prepared that angels heart with lots of love from a big loving family and from god above
Her life was humble in the beginning, she could never imagine what god was plannin
Even in Poverty she lifted up her voice to share with others
That sweet honey alto voice would make its way to millions of ears which god had planned from the beginning
Her sweet smile and uplifting personality drew millions to her but her love of God and family would keep her feet planted firm on the ground
She would endure testing along the way but with god and time on her side her destiny would not be denied
Clara Ann would give way to Patti Page and set the stage for the singing rage
Decades have passed and the gift god gave us goes on filling our ears with that sweet honey alto voice.
The stage is set Clara Ann is coming home where it all began and may it go on for a long to come
Patti,Clarann, Katie thanks from the bottom of my heart for the special touched by god talent you have shared with all of us and just being here tonight is the greatest thrill of my life and if you are reading this you and I have met even though I feel I've known you always love Marilyn Sutherland a friend and a fan god bless

I gave Patti this poem that night and on her 83 rd birthday I emailed it to her again ! God brought me into her life I loved her as if she were family I will miss her and I know I'm not alone till we meet again my sweet Patti

I'm the DJ that made Tennessee Waltz the gigantic hit it became. I learned of Patti's passing while on a cruise with my wife. It is ironic that i sent an encouraging note on the 28th of December and sailed away on the 29th. The news of her death brought back a flood of memories. I was 22 when she and I connected in Philadelphia. i have the test record she made of TW hanging on my wall with her picture and her note saying "Thanks Tommy for all the years" I was at the recording session with the Mercury records distributor who was selling Boogie Woogie Santa Claus as her next big hit. I strongly disagreed and took the test record with me and began laying it 4 times an hour on my show on WCAM. They told me it sold 25,000 copies in 10 days. That was Nov-Dec, 1950. i never was able to enjoy Patti's hit from my effort because Uncle Sam took me in Jan. 1951 to serve in Korea. She was my gal. I took her to a cocktail party for Frank Sinatra. Drove her at 1:30 in the morning from an engagement in Phila to NYC for her opening at the world famous Copacobana. She almost missed opening because the electric windows in my car went down and would not go up. It was 29 degrees and snowing during the entire trip. He voice left her temporarily. It was a close call. What memories. I'm 84 and going strong in Bal Harbour Florida. I'll dearly miss a sweet and wonderful friend...sleep well Patti and teach the angels to sing like you. Here we go again? We are loosing all the great American Vocalists. When I heard Patti Page for the first time way back in l950 singing her great rendition of the Tennesse Waltz I knew right then and there that her voice was so beautiful to listen to. Sorry to say today you are not hearing that kind of talent. You have those screamers like Lady Ha Ha and Bruce Bedspring with back up bands that sound like pots and pans. Notice when you heard Patti sing you heard each and every note. She never had to scream and depend on loud amplification . Like the best of them. Anita O day June Christy Julie London Chris Connor she will always be remembered for her sweet loving girl next door sound. We love you Patti and you left America Music with a stamp of approval. She will be sadly missed by all her fans and especially by admirers of great American Music. And by the way each and every one of her songs has tested the time base. Good Music never dies it gets better with Age. Patti always had that unmistakeable sound. Love You Patti forever.
