Howard Thomas

Howard, Jr., beloved family man, died in Putnam, CT on Monday, December 23, 2013 at age 84.
A resident of S. Hackensack, NJ, formerly of Ho-Ho-Kus and Westfield, NJ, he was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant on the Fletcher-class destroyer USS Baerss and was a member of the VFW Post 1049 in Waldwick. NJ.
A graduate of Somerville High School, he went on to graduate in 1952 from Rutgers University where he majored in business administration.
Over the course of his career he held positions in Sales and Marketing with the Ford Motor Company, Hess Oil & Chemical, Maryland Specialty Wire and Sandvik Steel.
He retired in 1992, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hackensack, NJ, a volunteer at the Hackensack Medical Center, as well as a loyal and lifelong fan of the NY Jets.
He was predeceased by his parents Howard Thomas and Eleanor Conover Thomas of Somerville and Rahway, NJ.; and his brother William Thomas of Spring Lake, NJ.
Howard is survived by his wife Barbara Thomas of S. Hackensack; and will be deeply missed by his former wife Gwen Thomas of Melbourne, and their three daughters; Sally Thomas of Pomfret, CT; Jennifer Thomas of Killingly CT and Toni Thomas of Ridgewood, NJ. He also leaves behind six loved and loving grandchildren: Kaitlin, Sean, Chelsea, Hilary, Melissa and Logan, as well as his son-in-law and pal, Gerard O'Rourke.
Arrangements were made by Gilman and Valade Funeral Home of Putnam CT.
A celebration of his life and memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17th2014 at the Vanderhoven Chapel at Hazel Wood Cemetery in Rahway, NJ.
Howard loved the ocean, music, life, laughter and sweet, summer corn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rutgers University Foundation in care of Elizabeth A. Trustlow, Esq., Executive Director of Gift Planning, Rutgers University Foundation, Winants Hall, 7 College Ave, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
