Henry Jamroz Obituary

RIDGEWOOD — Henry T. "Hank" Jamroz, 92, died on July 25.

Son of the late Stanley Jamroz and Estella Malec Jamroz, he was born on Feb. 22, 1920 in Chicopee, Mass. He was a Ridgewood resident since 1950. Employed at Bendix Aviation Corp. as an aeronautical instrument maker from 1949 to 1980, he was a member of the Eclipse-Pioneer Division and participated in assembling gyroscopes, in a 'clean room' environment, which were used in space exploration missions, government defense and private industry projects, most notably, Pershing and Poseidon missiles and the Apollo, Skylab and Space Shuttle missions. In 1968, he received an award from NASA for his work that contributed to the success of Apollo 11. During World War II, he made hydraulic tools at the Springfield Armory and, with a severe shortage of civilian men in the workplace, redesigned equipment making it possible for women to operate jobs that previously could only be handled by men. Enlisting in the Navy in 1946, he became a Photographer's Mate, Third Class. While based in Pensacola, Fla. and Bermuda he performed aerial photography of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and coastlines. He attended the NY Institute of Photography. In NYC, he attended Taus School of Watchmaking receiving certification as a watchmaker and was later employed at Bulova Watch Co. He was an athlete in baseball, ice hockey, golf, basketball, swimming and, while in the Navy, learned to box and served as a lifeguard. As a civilian, he was honored for rescuing a swimmer that was drowning in the Chicopee River. He also attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School, Chicopee High School and Northeastern University.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Galletly Jamroz; his children, Nancy Jamroz of Pompton Lakes, Steve Jamroz and wife Beth and their children Tamson, Kenna and Jack of Franklin Lakes and Sheila Jamroz Shilling and husband Harvey and their daughter, Sara of Ridgewood. He was predeceased by his brothers, Alexander Jamroz and Edward Jamroz.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11 at C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12 at First Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood; burial at Brick Church Cemetery in Montgomery, N.Y. will be a private service for family.

Memorial donations may be made to The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851; themmrf.org.
