Alida Gardenier Obituary
Alida Gardenier

Gardenier, Alida (nee Fels), a longtime resident of Hawthorne, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 8, 2018. The eldest of 13 children, she was born February 3, 1921, in Zaandam, the Netherlands, then moved with her family to the Hague. After completing primary school there, she began to work part-time as a domestic worker to help support her family. She survived the great depression and the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. During the "hunger winter" of 1944-45, she and her sister walked over 80 km each way to a farm to bring back food for the family, likely helping their younger siblings survive. After the war she moved to Rotterdam where she met her husband Adrian Gardenier. They were married and emigrated to the United States in 1951. After landing in Hoboken, she lived in Glen Rock, Prospect Park, Totowa, and Paterson prior to moving to Hawthorne in 1963. She continued working part-time until age 82. She had diverse interests, including music, theater, and politics. She traveled as often as she could, mostly to visit her family in Europe and New Zealand. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Gardenier, also of Hawthorne, her son Donald Gardenier, and son-in-law Thomas A. McGillis, of Palm Springs, CA, one grandson, 6 sisters, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Adrian Gardenier in 1995, and by one sister, and her five brothers. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne. Cremation will be private with a memorial service to be held at a later date. If you choose, memorial donations can be made to Eva's Village, Paterson, NJ. (www.browningforshay.com)
