Bernard Martin Hirschenson Obituary
Bernard Martin Hirschenson

Hirschenson, Bernard Martin of Wanaque, New Jersey formerly of Ho-Ho-Kus, died peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the age of 87 years old from a brief illness.

Born in Manhattan, New York on March 21, 1931 in a taxi cab to parents Isadore and Gertrude Hirschenson he was raised in the Bronx. He has lived in Wanaque for the past 12 years, before that he lived in Ho-H0-Kus for 40 years.

Bernard was in the film industry for over 60 years making countless commercials, television movies and documentaries. His passion for the arts started at a young age and he pursued this in the army as a photographer and once out of the army he made this his full time career. Bernie lived the most amazing life traveling the world; photographing five presidents; meeting interesting people along the way and fulfilling his dreams. Not too many of us can be so lucky to say they loved their job. Bernie married his high school sweetheart Catherine in November of 1953 and their almost 65 years of marriage was one of his greatest gifts. Bernard was the proudest of his daughter Valerie and his two amazing grandsons Lucas and Matthew. He would talk about them to all his friends with that sparkle in his deep blue eyes. Everyone who met Bernie was touched by his sweetness, kindness, and his remarkable resemblance to "Santa Claus". Bernie would not cut his beautiful white hair for a few months leading up to that special day in December. For many years Bernie would wake up before dawn and travel to New York City and help deliver gifts dressed in his bright red suit to the many children at the Hale House. This brought so much joy to him. In recent years, he continued this at the Lantern Restaurant, where he frequented often with Catherine, and the local Library. He loved to make people happy and we believe he did.

Bernard is survived by his devoted wife Catherine, his daughter Valerie Davey (Christopher), of New Windsor, New York and his two grandsons, Luke and Matthew of New Windsor, New York and his beloved sister Molly Smollett,of Las Vegas, New Mexico. His wonderful cousins, who he loved so much; his nieces and nephews and his many friends of the Wanaque Reserve. Bernard is predeceased by his parents and his sister Hazel Rosenthal and nephew Joel Smollett.

The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Bernstein for his compassion and caringness to Bernie and his family during this very difficult time. They would also like to thank everyone who took care of him during his final days at the Villa Marie Claire Hospice in Saddle River, NJ. Everyone was just amazing, caring, and dedicated to his comfort and needs and reassuring which brought such comfort to us all. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The family will be receiving visitors on Thursday, May 17th from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at D'Agostino Funeral Home at 881 Ringwood Avenue, Haskell, NJ. Funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wanaque Ambulance Corp; or the Villa Marie Claire Hospice, in Saddle River, NJ.
