Jean Alice Weiss Obituary
Jean Alice Weiss

River Edge - Jean Alice Weiss, (nee: Reich) of River Edge, NJ passed away on Sunday morning September 9, 2018. She was born in Brooklyn, NY the younger of the two daughters of Louis Reich and Rose Adler Reich. Predeceased by husband Jerome M. Weiss. Devoted mother of Janice Wolfe and her late husband, Blair, and Jeffrey S. Weiss and his wife( Carrie). Cherished grandmother to Joshua and Zachary Weiss.

As a young teenager, she joined a Zionist youth organization which served as the catalyst for her future devotion to Zionism and Israel. During this time, after school, she travelled the New York City subways at rush hour, going from subway car to subway car making a speech in each car appealing for funds to establish a Jewish homeland in what was then Palestine, and using a JNF "Pushka" to collect the nickels, dimes and sometimes quarters contributed mainly by Jewish garment workers heading home after a hard hot day in the factory.

This dedication to Zionism led her to full-time employment by the Jewish Agency for Palestine, at that time the spokes-organization for Zionist aspirations. When the case for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine was being discussed by the United Nations and the partition plan was being considered, she worked around the clock for such Jewish leaders as Abba Eban, Moshe Shertok (Sharett), Nahum Goldmann and others who prepared speeches and other presentations in support of the establishment of a Jewish State and the partition plan. This early dedication to Zionism and support for the State of Israel continued throughout her life.

Services will be 11am on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Louis Suburban Chapel, 13-01 Broadway (Route 4 West) Fair Lawn, NJ. Burial will follow at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, NJ. Memorial donation in the name of Jean A. Weiss may be made to to place service dogs with special needs children.
