John B. Minkoff

Princeton - John B. Minkoff, beloved father, brother, and husband. Musician and scientist. Born in Brooklyn on June 16, 1931, passed away on December 28, 2018 in Princeton, New Jersey. Dr. Minkoff attended Cornell University and obtained a bachelor's degree in music from Juilliard, where he studied the trumpet under William Vacchiano. He also studied at Tanglewood under Roger Voisin. After serving in the U.S. Army in Berlin from 1954 to 1956, he decided to pursue his passion for science, receiving a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Columbia University. As a research associate at the Columbia University Electronics Research Laboratories, and later as a manager at Riverside Research Institute, Dr. Minkoff worked in the fields of electro-optical and acousto-optical systems and signal processing. He also participated in the first series of ionospheric modification experiments in conjunction with the US Dept. of Commerce Institute for Telecommunications Sciences. As a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories and the ITT Space Division, Dr. Minkoff worked on projects related to satellite communications systems, noise and vibration control, and wireless transmission systems. He authored two books on signal noise and processing. In 2000, he became director and conductor of the Hawthorne Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey, serving until 2012. He was an avid lifelong student of classical piano. Predeceased by his parents, Alvin and Mollie Minkoff, and his son, Stephen A. Minkoff, he is survived by his son, John A. Minkoff; daughter-in-law, Lori Robbins; his wife, Susan B. Alder Minkoff; his sister, Helen Bates; and his friend, Bernice Haase-Lask.
