Ohannes "Jeannot" Krikor Hagopian

Ohannes "Jeannot" Krikor Hagopian died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, from complications of cancer on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the age of 72. A resident of Ridgewood, New Jersey since 1983, he was born on November 4, 1945 in Beirut, Lebanon. He was the fourth and youngest child of the late Krikor and the late Marie (Altounian) Hagopian, both survivors of the Armenian Genocide. He graduated from Hovagimian High School and received bachelors and masters degrees from the American University of Beirut. He and his wife of 30 years, the late Gloria (Jololian) Hagopian, were married in August 1970 in Beirut, Lebanon. They moved to New York City in September 1970 to attend Columbia University where he earned his doctor of philosophy from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. During a career spanning over four decades, he was a dedicated college professor and administrator in New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

He had a keen intellect, huge heart, and generous spirit. Passionate about classical music, no day was complete without Bach or Beethoven. The New York Times crosswords, also part of his daily routine, were no match for him. He firmly believed the longer the walks with his dog, the better.

A loving and deeply devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, he is survived by his sons, Vahe Hagopian and Armen Hagopian; sisters, Anahid Kouyoumjian, Araxie Poladian, and Ani Arabian; loving companion, Peggy Romano; numerous nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 16 at 10 AM at St. Leon Armenian Church, 12-61 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Dr. Hagopian's memory to the Children of Armenia Fund (www.coafkids.org, 149 5th Avenue, Suite 500, New York, NY 10010). Arrangements are being handled by Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, Fair Lawn, www.vpfairlawn.com.
