He was born in Englewood, NJ and resided in Cliffside Park most of his life before recently moving to Hawthorne. He retired from Janney Montgomery Scott, New York, NY after working in the financial industry as a stock broker for 63 years. Prior to Janney Montgomery Scott, he was employed by Fahnestock, New York, NY. Robert was an Army veteran having served during the Korean War. He loved a good party, playing cards and sports, especially the NY Giants and playing a good round of golf. Throughout the years, he particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and was extremely proud of what each of them accomplished. Most endearing to Robert was spending time with his family, whom he is survived by his devoted children; Eileen R. Scherer of Hawthorne, NJ, with whom he lived, Caryl Giordano and her husband, Robert of Stamford, CT and David A. Scherer and his wife, Elizabeth of Hawthorne, NJ, his five grandchildren; Robert and his wife, Jacquelyn, Julianne, Francesca, Meagan and Dana, his brother, Walter Scherer of Franklin Lakes, NJ and his sisters, Gloria Scherer and Agnes Fino both of West Milford, NJ. Robert was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Julianne Scherer on July 18, 2004, his brothers, Frederick Scherer Jr., and James Scherer and his sisters Virginia Scherer and Irene Thompson. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 15, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481.
