Schuyler Warmflash Obituary

Schuyler Warmflash

Schuyler Warmflash passed away on December 17, 2020 at the age of 95 in Seattle, Washington. Born in the Bronx in 1925, Sky attended DeWitt Clinton High School, earned an engineering degree from City College, joined the Army, and married his high school sweetheart, Anita (Braitman). He eventually moved to Teaneck, NJ, where he and his wife resided over 35 years.

Sky was an aviation facilities planner for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and developed major projects for Kennedy International, Newark, and Teterboro airports. He later pursued a Master's degree in Art History, attending Columbia University and Hunter College, while working full-time. Upon his retirement, he became a well-regarded leader in architectural preservation in New Jersey, Bergen County, and Teaneck. He was the first chair of the Teaneck Preservation Committee and was on the board of the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs and the County Historic Preservation Advisory Board. In 2001, he coauthored "The Architecture of Bergen County, New Jersey" with T. Robins Brown, published by Rutgers University Press.

Sky loved art, architecture, music, literature, and travel. He and his wife regularly attended opera, symphony, chamber music, and dance performances. They traveled across the world, from Western and Eastern Europe to Turkey, China, and India. In 2004, they moved to Seattle to be close to family. He was a devoted husband, father, and "papa" to his only grandchild. Sky is survived by Anita, his loving wife of 72 years, his daughter Eve, and granddaughter Emma. His son Daniel passed away in 2015.

Remembrances can be made to any arts organization in Teaneck or New York City.

While I did not know your Dad, I learned glimpses of him from your Mother. Anita was my therapist In Teaneck for many years. I would ask that you give your Mom by deepest sympathy. May his memory be a blessing.

Thank you for sharing your memories of Sky. My dad had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a deep desire to share his interests with others. I’m so touched that his work in preservation, and specifically his appreciation for the architecture of Bergen County, lives on.

I was an Assistant to Tenafly's late Borough Historian, Virginia T. Mosley, a great admirer of Schuyler's work. In the 1982-83 Bergen Co. Historic Sites Survey, he enlightened the town about Daniel T. Atwood, a published 19th c. architect who designed our iconic RR Station and various homes here. Tenafly will forever be grateful to him, as much of Atwood's work has been landmarked.

The US has lost a great citizen. We especially enjoyed working with him on his book about the old Dutch stone houses of Bergen county, NJ. It was a pleasure to have known him. Jerri and Klaus Angermueller of Oakland, NJ.
