Wallace Cowan Obituary
Dallas, TX - Wallace "Wally" Edgar Cowan died October 24, 2018, at the age of 94 in Dallas, TX.
Wally was born January 28, 1924 in Hoboken, New Jersey. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Airforce during World War II. He served from 1942 - 45 as Pilot of a B17 Flying Fortress. Wally flew his plane, "Ticket Home", 37 missions over France and Germany. Wally received The Air Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Clusters - a distinction for war service and heroism, returning his entire crew and plane back safely after each mission.
After his service, Wally graduated Magna Cum Laude from New York University with a B.S. in Accounting and Harvard Law School Cum Laude in 1950. He joined the law firm Stroock, Stroock & Lavan in New York City and worked for 44 years as an Associate and then Partner. He was on the Board of Directors and Secretary to Ametek, Inc. for 24 years.
Wally served the township of Teaneck, New Jersey as the Chairman of the Advisory Board for Parks, Playgrounds, and Recreation for 31 years. He was considered the 'savior' of a 200-year-old Red Oak tree in Teaneck. Wally was a Board Member of the Hackensack River Walkway for many years. He received a Bergen County, New Jersey Distinguished Service Award in 1994 and the Bergen County Distinguished Achievement Award in 2001. Wally was active in his synagogue, Congregation Beth Shalom in Teaneck, and served as President for 3-years.
Wally was predeceased by daughter, Dr. Laurie Cowan, (Mark Lewittes) of Wilmington, Delaware and is survived by wife of 71 years, Ruth nee Daitzman, and children Paul "Yirmi" (Chaya) Cowan of Israel, and Judy (Jeff) Kogutt of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His hobbies included bird-watching, world-travel, photography, and hiking. Wally will be remembered by family and friends for his life-long service, dedication to family and community, and his infectious laugh and warmth.

I just saw a B-17 and immediately thought of my mentor during my first baby steps as a lawyer.
Wally was a great boss, an amazing mentor and always - an inspiration.

Terrific guy, smile, sense of humor. Always a pleasure to see him and Ruth. My memories of tagging along with him, my father, and the other bird watchers will never be forgotten. With a couple of exceptions they're all gone now, and the birding trips too are gone forever. Words cannot express how much I miss Wally and the others and the fun times we spent together. My condolences to Ruth and the family.
