Evan Krieger Obituary

KRIEGER
Evan T., 83, died Sunday, October 7. A Haworth resident since 1956, he was born September 26,1929 in Hackensack to Max and Helen (née Singer) Krieger.
Evan was the adoring husband of Miriam for 57 years, and the devoted father of three daughters and their families: Deborah (and husband Dana Jennings) of Montclair; Barbara (and husband Robert Hayes) of Haworth; and Janet (and husband Howard Mack) of Shaker Heights, Ohio. He was a loving and dedicated grandfather to Drew and Owen Jennings, Kellen and Chelsea Hayes, and Lori and David Mack. He is also survived by his older siblings: Gladys Hampton of Hackensack and Murray Krieger of Florida.
Evan graduated from Hackensack H.S. in 1947 and from the University of Virginia in 1951, where he was president of his fraternity, AEPi. He served in the Air Force from 1951-56, then was a partner in his family's business, Krieger's Men's Store in Hackensack. Since 1962 he was a financial consultant, most recently at Certified Financial Services in Paramus, and was honored in April for 50 years of service to Guardian Life Insurance Co. Over the years he earned several professional degrees; he also held memberships and earned honors in numerous professional organizations.
He was a member of Temple Beth El of Closter since 1957 and served on its Board of Trustees and in its Brotherhood. He was Chairman of the Israel Bond Committee of Northern Valley. He was a charter member and past president of the Northern Valley Lodge of B'Nai Brith. He served as Chairman of the Board and president of the Northern/Pascack Valley Division of the Bergen County YMHA. He was a member of the Hackensack Rotary Club, the Lions Club of River Edge, and the Fulton Masonic Lodge in Westwood. He was also a member of the Wyoming Consistory and the Shriners. In 1999 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Pascack Valley Hospital Foundation, then served on Englewood Hospital and Medical Center's Foundation Board. In his younger years he was an avid tennis player and bike rider. Later he enjoyed driving his antique cars in parades in Closter, Haworth, Oradell and Paramus.
Those who knew him valued Evan's devotion to his family, loyalty to his friends, outgoing personality, and integrity. He loved to travel and made friends wherever he went. He leaves behind family, friends, colleagues and neighbors who stayed in touch and visited regularly until the end.
The funeral service will be held at Temple Beth El at 1 on Tuesday, October 9. Burial follows at Riverside Cemetery in Saddle Brook. Shiva will be held at the Krieger home, 316 Franklin Street in Haworth, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In lieu of flowers, Evan's family encourages donations to the Englewood Hospital Foundation, the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, or Temple Beth El. Evan, Daddy, Poppy - We will love you and remember you forever.

Not sure what to say?

October 10, 2012

Aunt Mim, Debbie, Barbara and Janet,

I am was very sorry to hear about "Uncle Evan's" passing. I will always remember the jokes that he would tell me as a kid and even as an adult. My favorite was 'have you seen a picture of my pride and Joy?" He would pull out his wallet and show me a picture of Pride and Joy dishwashing soap. Please know that my thoughts and prayers of comfort are with you all.

All my love,

David Bookman

Rarely does one come across a man like Evan Krieger. He was devoted to, and immensely proud, of his family: His friendship knew no bounds. I'm honored to have been his friend, and I, and those many others whose lives he touched, will miss him dearly.
Rest in peace my friend.

My prayers go out to the Krieger family. Mrs K, your husband was a wonderful man (you knew that!) who never failed to find time for family and friends. I will always remember the days visiting the Krieger household (being regaled by Mr K's stories) as well as lunch in Singapore several years ago. It is easy to say that memories of him will live on - but he also lives on in those he has influenced over the years. God bless.
