Mary (nee Tubito) Valastro-Piccinch

Mary (nee Tubito) Valastro-Piccinch of Hoboken, New Jersey, formerly of Little Ferry, New Jersey, passed away on June 22, 2017 surrounded by her adoring family at the age of 69. Born on April 17, 1948, in Altamura, Bari, Italy, Mary traveled to the United States with her parents, Nicola and Maddalena Tubito, where she lived with her siblings. A longtime resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, Mary was employed by the now famed Carlo's Bakery, where she met her first husband, Bartolo "Buddy" Valastro Sr. The betrothed pair would go on to welcome five children: Grace, Maddalena, Mary, Lisa and Bartolo "Buddy" Valastro.

Mary and Buddy Sr. became the proud owners of Carlo's Bakery in 1964. With the bakery acting as a staple in Hoboken, Mary and Buddy Sr. quickly became pillars of the community. Most known for her larger than life personality, Mary was beloved by many. After winning over the hearts of millions on the television show Cake Boss, her diagnosis in 2011 of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) and the subsequent charitable organization created in her name, the Momma Mary Foundation, raised awareness worldwide for the neurodegenerative disease.

A devout Catholic with values deeply rooted in Italian tradition and heritage, Mary was a devoted attendee of St. Joseph's Church in Jersey City; St. Francis in Hoboken; and St. Margaret of Cortona in Little Ferry.

Upon the untimely death of Buddy Sr., Mary and her children would begin to work diligently at Carlo's Bakery to accomplish his ultimate goal of making the hometown Hoboken bake shop a household name. Through years of hard work and devotion, the success of the bakery would quickly garner the attention of the media and eventually offer to be a subject of the now hit television series, Cake Boss. It was via this medium [that] the world would come to know and love the passionate, family-oriented and motivated Mary. Her work ethic, compassion, sense of humor and ability to accomplish the American Dream left a mark on those who watched the show and those who had the pleasure of knowing her personally. Her magnetic energy had the uncanny ability to bring smiles to the faces of everyone around her. Although Mary officially retired in 2010, she continued to visit often, singing animatedly and bringing joy to the Carlo's Bakery employees and guests who had come to love her.

Mary is survived by her husband, Sergio Piccinch, and five children, Grace and her husband, Joseph Faugno; Maddalena and her husband, Mauro Castano; Mary and her husband, Joe Sciarrone; Lisa and her fiancé, Anthony Torre; and, Buddy and his wife, Lisa Valastro. Mary was a dear sister to Max and his wife, Laura; the late Joseph; Vincent and his wife, Susan; Nicholas and his wife, Maria; Dominick and his wife, Janet; Annette; and, Anna. She was a loving grandmother to Robert, Bartolina, Mary, Dominique, Buddy, Lucia, Joseph, Teresa, Isabella, John, Sofia, Buddy, Marco and Carlo.

In lieu of gifts and flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Mary's name to St. Joseph's Church, Jersey City, New Jersey.

To Buddy & the Famiglia, I am deeply sorry about the passing of "Momma Mary". Buddy, I am a huge fan of your show from the first time it came on TV. "Momma Mary" reminded me of My Italian Aunts, Carmella & Annunziata!! I loved watching how this amazing little Italian Momma kept your sisters & you in their places!! I watched a show last night about "Buddy vs. Christmas". I remember Momma always saying she was the true boss of the bakery!! May Momma Mary rests in peace & I am happy that you, Buddy respected your Momma so much!! Te amo, Buddy!! Just know that she is in Heaven with your precious Dad, Buddy & Salvatore ( the baker who worked with your Dad)!! Te amo!!
Love a real Calabrese Italian Woman,
Patricia Rose Labazzetta-Mastromonico
P.S.- I tried to get My Daughter to bring me to your bakery when it was in Ridgewood, NJ. But sadly it closed before she would take me there!! Te amo, Bartolo!!

Dear Buddy and the entire Valastro Family - My family and I want to send our deepest condolences on the loss of your amazing mother. It was clear from watching your show that she could light up a room with her presence, smile, energy and love of life.

I began watching your show some years ago, at first, just because of the name Buddy. My son, then about 6 (now 12), goes by the nickname Buddy. We fell in love with the similarities of owning a family business, having a big Italian family and all the craziness and fun that comes with that. We have visited the bakery a few times and were sweetly greeted by your sisters Mary and Grace. Mary quickly noticed us call our son Buddy and took a cute picture with him.

When it was reported that your mom was diagnosed with ALS, our hearts broke for all of you. See, my husbands brother had just been diagnosed with ALS not many months prior. As we supported him through the battle he was facing, we tried to find updates on how your mom was doing. We were pulling for her the way we were pulling for him. It's terrible when anyone is going through any type of health crisis, but to watch the effects of ALS on anyone, especially someone you love, is just horrible.

When I read in June that your mom passed away, my heart broke for each and every one of you. I didn't have the heart to share the news with my husband. His brother is his best friend. Sadly, my sweet brother-in-law lost his battle this September.

As we are both facing the first holiday season without those we love so much, we wanted to send our love and prayers to you and your family. You will be in our thoughts. As much as we wish they could be physically with us, we know they are with us in spirit, with amazing family memories and now as angels to watch over us. We are thankful that their suffering no longer. God Bless you all! ❤

She is not dead, she's just away.
Ps. Love your show

I was SO SORRY to hear of your mother's passing. I just watched the tribute show and it made me cry. I think everyone who watched your show felt as though they knew your Mom. She was a spitfire for sure. What an incredible lady! We'll all miss her on your show.

I lost my Mom this past April so, I can certainly relate to your devastating loss. My Mom was 93 and she lived a long and fulfilling life but still very difficult to lose your Mom.

May your family find peace and comfort in the months ahead. She had an incredible family. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Valasto family.

A good day. My grandkids help me fight.
Buddy, just watched your show. I went from discussing a possible vow renewal with my husband of 32 years, to holding his hand silently as we watched your family go through the passing of your mom. I have a permanent brain disease called moyamoya. And besides strokes and a coma, we can only hope God will allow me to live years of retirement with my husband. Family is everything. Loss is so hard to take. But it looks like you had alot parties in life. I pray to have one more before my God takes me home. Your memories are all you have. I'm giving as many as I can to my grandchildren, my husband. There are no promises in life. But we can love our family, and love God so that we will see them again one day when we do pass on. Wether it's tomorrow, or five years from now. Take care of your beautiful family!!!

To Buddy and all his famiglia...Momma Mary will be deeply missed. My brother was 52 when he graced the Heavens from the same disease. He was diagnosed in May of 2014 and died on December 8, 2014. He didn't even have a full year. It attacked his breathing. He is in a better place and so is your Momma. May God keep her and my brother in His grace always. God bless you Buddy and all of your family. It's been a rough road, I know. That disease takes everything. I'm always praying for a miracle cure. So far, unfortunately, not much. Rest in peace, Mary Valastro.
