James B. Palmer June 10, 1931 - January 10, 2013 Lisbon - James B. Palmer ("Jim") departed on "Eternal Patrol" on January 10, 2013 after a life battle with age. Jim was born in Lisbon on June 10, 1931, the third son of Earle and Martha Palmer. He was schooled at Lisbon Central School (1945), Norwich Free Academy (Class of 1949), and UCONN (1 1/2 years). He then entered the US Navy (Korean War, 1950-1954). Jim served honorably on two submarines and one Auxiliary Submarine Rescue for Diver's School. After his time in the service, he returned to Lisbon and with his wife, Ruth (Hoddy) raised four children. Surviving Jim are his children; Jim Jr. and Janet Palmer of Lisbon, Steven and Diane Palmer of Oakdale, Nancy and Scott Ebersole of Colchester, Sally and Martin Masse of Norwich; his dear friend and companion, Bertha Scrivani; his brother, Charles Palmer and wife, Phyllis, of Lisbon; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Ruth, who passed away in 2002. Two of Jim's brothers, Earle Palmer, Jr. and Lloyd Palmer also predeceased him. As Jim's children were growing up, he worked many jobs and hours as a Wire Drawing Superintendent at Plastic Wire & Cable in Jewett City, a self-employed garbologist and Laundromat owner, a ship fitter at Electric Boat, and a rural mail carrier for the US Post Office. Jim was a Granger (PH #95), Master Mason at Mt. Vernon #75, life member of Sub-Vets (Groton), Holland Club member (50 years qualified submariner), Life Member at V.F.W. Post # 10004, and Honorary Member of "Old Fart's Society" of USS Tiru SS 416. Jim was especially proud of his Naval Service (submarine service and deep sea diving). After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling around the country to attend many Sub-Vet reunions and joining many of his former ship mates.
