Joseph Gualtieri Obituary

Joseph P. Gualtieri Dec. 25, 1916 - Jan. 25, 2015 NORWICH - Joseph Gualtieri was born on December 25, 1916 in Royalton, Illinois. He lived with his family in Cararra, Italy for 10 years and returned to graduate from the Norwich Free Academy with a scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute. Upon graduation he returned to become an art teacher at the Norwich Free Academy for many years and later the director of the Slater Memorial Museum. Many people have considered him a Renaissance Man because of his versatility in life. He developed Rose Garden Lane, spearheaded the charter revision of Norwich in the 1960's and participated in various civic related endeavors. He was a member of the Mystic Art Association, the Norwich Italian Club and the friends of the Slater Memorial Museum. He also taught at two colleges in Hartford. His greatest passion in life was art. He was a very prolific artist. He was happiest as the director of the Slater Memorial Museum and teaching art students at the Norwich Free Academy. He is a nationally renowned artist and has paintings in permanent collections at several museums, galleries and private collections all across America. He is survived by his second wife, his brother, two children, grand children, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. We invite everyone to celebrate his life at a Memorial Service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Norwich on June 25, 2015 at 2:00 P.M.

As an art historian, I wish I had met him and been able to interview him about his works. I hope his family will contact me to discuss.

I remember Joe Gualtieri well and his wife Maria. My parents Robert & Connie Klein were best friends we visited Norwich Ct often. It was here that Joe treated us to grinders and lobsters at times. I inherited Joe's painting The Man, which I cherish to this day.

I had the great pleasure of being an art student at NFA, class of 1969. The caliber of that program, for a high school, at least at that time, was unparalleled, and teachers like Mr. Gaultieri set the standards. That was a great place to learn and had a great environment. I loved the museum. He was a wonderful man.

I was a student of Mr. Gualitieri from 1963 to 1965. He was a superb Artist and Teacher of Art, who encouraged my creativity to emerge and shine. He was a gentle and kind soul and I have never forgotten him. I am so grateful he came into my life for this short amount of time. He made an impression on me that has lasted a lifetime. I send my sincere condolences to his family.

It was Joe Gualtieri's painting classroom where I spent many of my best days at NFA. Now it's the Native American Art gallery at NFA's Slater Museum.

As Joe Gualtieri's niece I had the opportunity to enjoy his wonderful sense of humor and great cooking, and as a student of his while at NFA, benefitted from his immense knowledge of art. Sonja Faulkner Johnston

Mr. G showed us the beauty all around us as teens that we couldn't quite see (the sixties). Then he showed us the world through HIS Slater Museum, and took us to far off places, without leaving NFA. How was it to live in China during the time the exhibit represented? Next we were off to Rome and Michelangelo's Pieta, then onto Greece with the great hall of statues. A most kind and gentle man of the greatest knowledge. Thank you and God Speed.
