Andrew MURRAY Obituary

MURRAY, Andrew Burger January 18,1927 - June 24, 2018 Dr. Andrew Murray died peacefully at home in West Vancouver on June 24, 2018. Born on an apricot farm in Golden Valley, South Africa and educated at Kingswood College and the University of CapeTown, he represented the university at athletics and rugby. He completed his paediatric training in London and Edinburgh. He studied paediatric allergy and researched ways of measuring the depth of an asthmatic child's respiration at Harvard University, where he met his wife Margaret (Molly) Bowden. In 1962 they moved to Canada and he subsequently became Professor of Paediatrics and the first Head of the Allergy Division at the BC Children's Hospital. He was recognized widely for his research concerning asthmatic children exposed to second hand smoke and house dust mites. After retiring in 1992 he attended art school and continued to paint, mountain climb and kayak for many years. He is survived by his wife Molly, daughter Anne (Mark), son William (Erin) and grandchildren Mary Alice, Eloise, Alexander, Andrew and Patrick. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 21 at 2 pm at the West Vancouver United Church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so, may make a donation in Andrew's memory to the "Keeping Connected" program at the West Vancouver Seniors Activity Centre.
