Daniel Pekovich Obituary

Dan Pekovich was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor and friend, encouraging pursuits in music, sports and education. A graduate of UBC, he began his teaching career in Woodfibre and in the late '50s, taught in England.

He met his future wife, Mirja, while travelling in Finland and they married in Turku, eventually settling in West Vancouver to raise four children. Dan taught in North Vancouver until his retirement. After retiring, the couple travelled frequently to Europe and the US. Dan regularly made beer, invited friends over to drink the beer, bought and renovated old houses, polished off several daily crosswords and played weekly basketball with his old Britannia crew into his late '70s!

Developing dementia, he moved into the Finnish Home with his wife, where he continued to sit with his crosswords in his lap long after he was able to do them. Dan passed away peacefully and is survived by his children, Andre (Hannelore), Michele (Alessio), Denise, and Martine; and his grandchildren, Nico, Ben, Gemma and Zoe; his sister, Delfa; and his brother, Michael. His wife of 59 years, Mirja, predeceased him by 7 months.

A memorial will be held when it is safer to meet together.

Andre, so sad to hear about your father's passing. I had the opportunity to meet him when he was in Juneau on a cruise ship in the 1990's and he was so kind, treating me like family even though we'd just met. I tried to get in touch with your family last year, but could not find a recent address. I was finally able to get to Montenegro for a visit in 2019, and your letter to my uncle Andy dated in 2008 was very helpful. Would love to compare notes.

Mr Pekovich was my wonderful, amazing Grade 8 Social Studies teacher. He loved the subject he taught and that passion came through in his classes. As a teacher in North Vancouver, I often think about him and hope that I can pass on my love of learning to my students, the same way he did for me. To his family- I'm so sorry for your loss- but he certainly left a legacy!
