Virginia "Ginny" Mitchell
Virginia "Ginny" Mitchell, age 88, passed away peacefully at her home October 11, 2020 surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Ginny grew up in New Orleans where she attended Ursuline Academy. She graduated from University of Southern Mississippi where she joined the Kappa Delta sorority. She remained active in Panhellenic activities throughout her life. In the mid-50's she made a life-changing decision to go on a blind date. She married Mike, the love of her life, shortly thereafter. Ginny continued her education at The Ohio State University earning a Master's degree in Education and taught elementary school for many years. As the wife of a USAF pilot, Ginny traveled the world with her family eventually settling on Okaloosa Island in the early 70's. There Ginny began her political career propelling Mike to the position of County Commissioner. He served for twenty years and would be the first to tell you he couldn't have done it without her. Ginny was actively involved with Republican Women of Okaloosa for decades as well as the Officer's Wives Club. She also ran the local office of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation where she was named Volunteer of the Year. She enjoyed a good competitive game of cards, especially bridge. She was skilled at the art of subtle interrogation, as all her kids will tell you.
As a child of the Depression, she never threw anything away and could whip up a magnificent salad out of a slice of cucumber and a few leafs of lettuce.
Ginny is preceded in death by Mike, her husband of 63 years. She is survived by four children Craig (Beth), Scott (Gail), Mary-Margaret (Tab Tollett) and John (Donna), plus five grandchildren Justin, Tyler, Ella, Camille, and Delaney and one Chihuahua called Lilly. Due to pandemic restrictions, family will attend a private funeral service at St. Simon's on the Sound. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Ginny are asked to make a donation in her memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation at https://www.jdrf.org/
