We moved from Highland to Oklahoma 10 years ago. But each visit back home I was welcomed home with the big, wonderful, unforgettable, Fr Lazar hug! The same hug he gave when I was 10 years old, is the same one I got when I was 30. Fr Lazar you will be missed, may your soul be dancing with Jesus today.

Father Lazar was a very personable man, and was always very concerned about my extended family, since he knew all of us from early on. We belonged to St. James for almost 25 years. He was missed by many when he retired, and we hope that his giving spirit will be picked up by all of us that were lucky enough to have known him.

Father Lazar was a fantastic priest who was one of a kind. He made you feel so special and was the most caring Father in the whole world. He had a wonderful laugh and smile and always gave so much of himself to everyone around him. If you needed anything from one of the sacraments to be performed to helping you with a problem in your life he was always their for you no matter what time of day or night it was. He stretched his time to give to so many people. We don't know how he did it. He must of only gotten three to four hours sleep on so many nights of the year. We love him and will miss his guidance forever. See you again in our future dearest Father.

My husband’s and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Father Lazar’s family and friends. I attended Our Lady of Grace School from 1960 (first grade) through 1964 (fourth grade), and remember Father Lazar very well. I lived in Highland until 1968 (we moved to Griffith), and will never forget going to masses said by Father Lazar. Even though I no longer attended masses said by Father Lazar, I never forgot him. I had the chance to meet a niece of Father Lazar’s, she was my nursing instructor at Wishard School of Nursing in Indianapolis, and we had the opportunity, when she dropped me off at my parents in Griffith one Thanksgiving break, to reminisce about her uncle. In 2006 my father died and Father Lazar came to my father’s viewing – he was in shorts! He excused his appearance, but considering who he is, we wouldn’t have even noticed! Father Lazar had a lot of nice things to say about my father, as well as my mother that died the year before. Father Lazar talked a long time with my husband, and in that short time made a new friend of my husband.
Father Lazar will be missed – he was a special priest and a special man.

When Father Lazar married us it was funny because he was calling me Terri during the ceremony. But my name is Theresa. But I figured Father Lazar can call me Terri, since he was the one marrying us.In fact he was the only one that called me Terri.Since he has known me since I was a baby,he must of then called me Terri. We will miss him dearly. His stories at mass were the Best.He would always say I just have one more story.

Father Lazar, like many priests in my life, was very generous and caring to me and my family.
Father Lazar olged all over my kids and had a special love for my son Randy, who was born nine years ago very premature and is now our little miracle and attends OLG with his big little sister.
Its sad that the selfless priests like him have to go, but he deserves to be in heaven and I can't wait to see him again there.

Father Lazar was a great priest who helped my mother Ellen Obrecht when her husband passed away EVEN though she wasn't Catholic. Fathar Lazar loved all people and helped all. He baptized two of our sons and was our pastor at St. James. He always remembered us when we returned to St. James after we left twenty-five years ago.
A great and truly spiritual priest.

Father Lazar was a wonderful inspiration when he was an Assistant Pastor at Holy Name Parrish in Cedar Lake. His work with the youth of the Parrish was exceptional and few will forget his generousity. Parents trusted him to guide their children and he did not disappoint them. At that time he dealt with some health problems but you could always count on him to be a counselor and friend. His death is our loss.

Father Lazar was a wonderful man who put others first. His devotion to God and to his church was immeasurable. Ministering to the men and women of law enforcement was a cause very close to his heart. He was truely a great man and will be missed by all who knew him, myself included.

Father Lazar was more than a priest, he was an angel that God had put on this earth. Father was always there for me in any time of meed, and always had the right answer, if it was an answer to comfort, or to educate, or to help me find the way to God by prayer or confession, he always was right.

Father Lazar did not just speak the word of our Lord, he walked and lived by the word of the Lord. I will never forget when Father came to me in the hospital when I was 5 yrs. old. He gave me my last rights before my surgery as a priest, but after my surgery he came to me and brought me a teddy bear and a hot air balloon (stuffed). He never had to come back to see me after my recovery, but he did because he cared.

Father care not just for me, but for the entire community in which he worked in as a priest for many years, Highland, IN.

I will always love father Lazar, and will never forget him, for he has helped me become the person I am today, a good Samaritan. You Father Lazar have taught me to do one to others as I would want done to my myself. I will be graduating soon, and plan to work for the American Red Cross, to bring others joy, compassion, food, and shelter, as you have done for my family.

Father Lazar you will be missed, but your memory of your plentiful life and soul will live on forever in all those you have touched in their hearts.

You weren't just a priest, you were a teacher of the Lord and my friend!

I was saddened to hear of FR. Lazar's passing. What a truly unique individual he was. My fondest memory of him was when he was picking up food we collected at the police station during the holiday period for the St. James food pantry. The good father heard confessions in a conference room at the station. I was busy loading food in his car and didn't have chance to meet with him in the station. He came out to his car and realized we had not had the chance to meet inside, so he sat me down in his car and heard my confession. I still smile at the thought of it. They broke the mold when he was made.

What a great service he provided to the men and women in uniform through his involvement in the police chaplaincy program. He once presented me with a blessed St. Michael's medal also. God Bless him and keep him.

Fr. Lazar
You will be deeply missed by my whole family, if there was a priest needed, you were there... and you will always be, one way or another. I will still cherish the stories of you and my grandfather I can still hear, espically the ones about Town Club. You've dedicated your life to God, and now you are deeply rewarded in his kingdom, so while I am sad in your passing I am so happy you are with the one you have deicated your life to.

Father Lazar, you will be missed by many. You touched our hearts with love, kindness, and spiritual guidance. Our three sons served as your altar boys. One day at mass the little altar boy told you his puppy was lost. You proceeded to pray to God to find the lost puppy. We did find him! You smiled with a twinkle in your eyes and said, "I told you I have a special connection with God". Your love of mankind and service to the Lord was unsurpassed. Our tears are being shed because we will miss you, but THE HEAVEN'S ARE SINGING WITH JOY TO WELCOME A VERY SPECIAL PRIEST AND FRIEND HOME. REST IN PEACE.

Father Lazar showed kindness & compassion to my mother, Anne, after my dad passed away. (She sends her condolences from Los Angeles)
Very interesting to note that Father Lazar died on a First Saturday, as did The Servant of God, Pope John Paul The Great. (Among the promises of Our Lady and the Scapular is that those who wear it will avoid hell and be delivered to Heaven on the first Saturday of the month following their deaths)
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for +Father Lazar in Dallas this week. May he rest in peace.

Father Lazar is what all priests should be. He was, and always will be, the people's priest. He helped so many people, including my family. My daughter, through a horrible divorce situation, and brought my husband back to the Church, and saved his soul. There are so many stories of people he helped, too numerous to list, but will always be remembered in our hearts. He IS with God, and we are happy he is at peace, out of pain, but we will always miss him. We lost a wonderful friend.
Thank you, Father, for being what every priest should be. You are, and always will be, in our hearts...The people's priest. Thank you for all you did for all of us.
