Maybelle (Magee) Owen SCHERERVILLE, IN - Maybelle (Magee) Owen, 86, of Schererville, IN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Chicago, IL on November 1, 1931 to David McNabb Magee and Mabel Catherine Hoyne, Maybelle lived the majority of her life in the south suburbs of Chicago. She cared deeply about education, and graduated two years early from the Loring School for Girls in Morgan Park. She continued her schooling at Valparaiso University, graduating in 1952 with a degree in English. After graduation, she moved back home to the Beverly neighborhood, where she met her future husband, Roger Hayden Owen, in the choir at Morgan Park Presbyterian Church. They married on December 28, 1957. She and the late Roger formed a beautiful life together, raising two children who survive them. Maybelle's legacy lives on in her daughters, Deborah (Joe) Molnar of Orland Park and Catherine (Jim) Meyer of Schererville, and precious grandchildren, with whom she lived for 13 years, Sean and Steven Meyer. She is also survived by her siblings, Ruth (late Bruce) Watson of Orland Park, David (Theresa) Magee of Wheaton, and Marion Doyle (William Harless) of La Grange Park, and several nieces and nephews. Welcoming her in Heaven are her beloved parents, husband, and siblings, Sally Magee and James (late Patricia) Doyle. In college, Maybelle continued her life's passion of singing through performing as the lead in musicals, as well as through participating in an acapella group and the chapel choir. Her first job after graduation was with Northern Trust, and she served there until 1957 when she received a teaching position at Horace Mann Elementary in Mount Vernon, IL. She would later go on to teach at schools in Oak Lawn, Glenwood, and Flossmoor. She taught the students of Illinois for several years until retiring to raise her children. Hoping to continue being active in her community, Maybelle led the Valparaiso Guild as its President, and participated in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She never gave up her passion for music, and always sought opportunities to use her beautiful soprano voice. She would often sing at weddings, funerals, and celebratory events. Her years in the music field would eventually earn her the position of Choir Director at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chicago Heights, IL. She loved praising the Lord through song, and always utilized her talents to serve Him. Known for her humor and sarcastic wit, Maybelle was loved by many. She loved her family and her friends, and it was a blessing to know her. There are not words to describe how wonderful a woman she was, and the world is a little less bright.
