Melvin Herman Doering VALPARAISO, IN - Melvin Herman Doering age 91 of Valparaiso passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018. Melvin is survived by his wife of 63 years Elizabeth, David R. Doering (brother), Norman Doering (son), Donna Doering (daughter), Melvin E. Doering (son), Terry T. Doering (son), Rebecca Serstock (daughter), David E. Doering (son), and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents August and Marie Doering, brothers Norman G. Doering and Terry P. Doering, and granddaughter Danielle Doering. A veteran of World War II, Melvin graduated from Valparaiso University in 1953. He then worked for Valparaiso University in the Publicity Dept. He went on to work for the Aid Association for Lutherans (now Thrivent), the Lutheran Laymans League, and Advance Magazine of the LCMS. Melvin returned to work at Valparaiso University in 1970 where he served as Director of Publications, and later as University Archivist. After retiring he continued to work part time in the university archives for several years. In his time as a student at Valparaiso University he famously rode a horse around the football field during games as the Crusader mascot. This activity, among others, saw him inducted into the University Sports hall of fame in 2004. A visitation will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Valparaiso on Saturday March 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will follow at noon. In lieu of flowers,donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church (1700 Monticello Park Dr., Valparaiso, IN) or Valparaiso University (1700 Chapel Dr., Valparaiso, IN).
