Neil G. Kohler HOBART, IN - Neil G. Kohler, age 89, of Hobart passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2020. He was born on August 8, 1930 in Chicago, IL. Neil was a graduate of Chesterton High School, Class of 1948. He retired from US Steel Gary Works after 30 years and later worked at Burns Funeral Home. Neil also retired as a Warrant Officer in the US Army Reserves after 20 years where he was a part of the Airborne Unit. He was a member of the Illiana Power Squadron and the Knights of Columbus, where he received the title of "Grand Knight". Neil was a dedicated member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hobart. During his free time, he enjoyed taking care of his yard and fish pond, going on fishing trips to Canada, and traveling with his family. Neil was an avid Cubs and Notre Dame fan. For many years, he would go to Indianapolis for the Indy 500 and on a Friday night in the fall, he would be in the stands cheering on his Hobart Brickies. Neil was preceded in death by his parents,Gerhard and Dorothy Sue Kohler; his wife of 63 years, Jean Kohler in 2016; son, Terry Kohler in 2013; three brothers: Bob, Gordon and Marvin. He is survived by his children: Sherry (Wayne) Palas of Hobart, Cindy (Ken) Mebert of Hobart, Michael (Sherrell) Kohler of Stafford, VA., brother-Elvin Kohler of IA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter due in August; many nieces and nephews. Due to Covid-19, funeral services for Neil will be private. Family will gather at BURNS FUNERAL HOME (Hobart) at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 21, 2020, Fr. Benjamin Ross officiating. Interment at Chapel Lawn Cemetery. Neil's family would like to thank Brentwood Assisted Living in Hobart for the last six years of loving care he received and to Miller's Senior Living in Portage, for the compassion he was given in his final days.

We have so many fond memories of Neil during our USPS boating days, the Indy races, and building the koi pond. Neil was truly a special friend and will be missed.

To Neils family.. I met Neil through my husband, Everett Geske... Neil and he would get together every once in a while and visit...He was so very proud of that fish pond..He was such a dear gentleman..dwell on the word gentle.
