Samuel E. McKibben "Sam" VALPARAISO, IN - Samuel E. McKibben "Sam", age 82, of Valparaiso, IN passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017. Sam was born in 1935 in Altoona, PA as the first born son of Samuel E. McKibben and Rose (Barr) McKibben who preceded him in death, as well as his brother, Richard (Anne) McKibben, of NY. Surviving are his siblings: Elizabeth 'Betty' Sanders, of KS, Jane Whitney, of FL, and John (Iris) McKibben of NC. Sam graduated from Penn State University in 1957 where he met and married his true love, Thelma (Giambattista) who survives. Together Sam and Thelma raised their three children: Dave (Christina) McKibben of Tucson, Kathy (Tom) Levandoski of Portage, and Dan (Carrie) McKibben of LaPorte; six grandchildren: David Swickard, Kellin Lambirth, David (Bethany) McKibben, Jason (Jaymee) McKibben, Eric McKibben, and Madison McKibben, and one great-grandchild, Alice McKibben. Sam played basketball for Penn State University and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He rose to the position of Foreman of the blast furnaces for Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown, PA. In 1969, Sam transferred to Bethlehem Steel in Burns Harbor where he was promoted to General Foreman until his retirement in 1992. Sam was an avid bridge player, fisherman, and reader. He loved country music as well as going out to dinner and plays. Sam loved to travel and he and Thelma traveled to Hawaii, Italy, Great Britain, Alaska and enjoyed many cruises, with their favorite being the one where they were surrounded by all of their children and their families. But above all, Sam was a devoted husband and father. His children and wife were his greatest source of pride and happiness. A memorial service will take place on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 3:00 PM at MOELLER FUNERAL HOME, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with visitation from 1:00 PM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Family & Youth Services Bureau of Valparaiso, 253 E. Lincolnway, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
