REV. ROBERT LEE KESSEL EAST CHICAGO/WHITING, IN
Rev. Robert Lee Kessel, 94, of East Chicago and Whiting, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011. He was the beloved husband of the late Lora E. (Whitmore) Kessel who passed away June 30, 1990; loving father of Norma Alam of Indianapolis and Sue Berge of East Chicago; cherished grandfather of Anver (Debbie) Alam, Marian Alam, Debbie (Bill) Kennedy and the late Christine Berge; adoring great grandpa of Christina (Thomas) Ely, Sarah Alam, Faith, Caroline and Caleb Kennedy and the late Shane Kennedy; proud great, great grandpa of Isaac Ely; dearest brother of Margaret Bjerke, Mabel Cox, Kenneth Kessel and the late Helen Kessel; dear uncle of Don Bjerke, Chuck Bjerke and Mary Ferguson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting with the Rev. Peggy Rogge officiating. Friends are invited to meet with the family from 2:00 p.m. to time of services. Rev. Kessel was born on November 26, 1916 in Waukan, Iowa to Andrew and Bessie (Thornton) Kessel and was a longtime resident of the Calumet Region. He became an ordained minister and was the pastor of the Spiritualist Church of New Hope in East Chicago. He was a WWII Army Veteran attaining the rank of Sergeant in the OSS Branch and had participated in the European Theatre. He was also a retiree of LTV Steel, East Chicago with a service of 20 years and was a member of the Whiting-Robertsdale Senior Citizens Club at the Whiting Community Center, participating in their Pinochle Club. Devoted to his family, he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family would be appreciated. (219) 659-4400.
