SIMARD--Claude, originally of Larouche, Quebec, passed away suddenly at age 57 on Tuesday, June 24. A resident of New York City since the 80s, he attended the Whitney Independent Study Program from 1983-84. Claude was the proud co-founder of Jack Shainman Gallery and a figure in the international art community. He started the gallery with his close friend Jack Shainman more than 30 years ago to enrich the lives of artists and those around them. Known for his kind words and innumerable acts of generosity, his quiet demeanor was only matched by his exuberance and expert eye. He nurtured the careers of numerous artists and touched the lives of countless individuals who credit him with their appreciation and love for art. An artist in his own right, his works and performances have been presented in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. He is survived by his mother, Marguerite, his sisters Guylaine, Gervaise and Nathalie, his brother Guy, and his beloved nieces and nephews Erika, Jean-Francois, Larry-Christopher, Pierre-Olivier, Anne-Julie, Anne-Catherine, Marie-Laurence, Amanda, Marc-Anthony, Alexandra, and Etienne. He will be deeply missed and may his name soon be spoken without effort. Funeral services will take place at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Avenue, on July 2 at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Claude's memory should be made to the Ali Forney Center,
