WALTER GLASS Obituary

GLASS--Walter H. Walter H. Glass, 91, died peacefully April 15, 2012, in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Born Vienna, Austria on February 13, 1921. Fled Nazis to US in 1939, encouraged in Austria by the Society of Friends (Quakers). B.A. Economics, University of Texas at Austin, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa '42. Trained in intelligence, Camp Ritchie. Served Europe, Army Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. Harvard Law, JD '47; hired by Securities and Exchange Commission. Married Ann Murkland '49. Coal reorganization of post-war Germany with State Department (HICOG) until joining General Electric in 1953 where he specialized in international contracts and traveled the world (with stint at Raytheon '59-'63) until retirement 1986. Active in Stamford-Greenwich Friends Meeting, and at Kendal on Hudson. Said his life's lessons were two principles: work hard, and be nice to people. He lived it and he passed it on. Survived by wife, Ann Glass, 87, of Sleepy Hollow, NY; children Martha Sullivan of New York, NY; Elizabeth Poyet of Larchmont, NY; Adam Glass of Washington, DC; Daniel Glass of Fairfield, CT, and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Kendal on Hudson in Sleepy Hollow, New York at 2:00pm, Saturday, April 28, 2012. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory may be made to the Walter H. Glass Endowment, Harvard University, Attn: Anne Funderburk, 124 Mt. Auburn St. Cambridge, MA 02138, checks payable to President and Fellows of Harvard College. It was Walter's wish to aid immigrant students facing financial hardship, inspired by the help he received.
