SHIRLEY LEVITON Obituary

LEVITON--Shirley Isacowitz. It is with great sorrow that the family of Shirley Isacowitz Leviton announces her passing, January 3, 2019 as she approached her 99th birthday. Born in Brooklyn, NY on January 20, 1920, Shirley was an accomplished woman whose greatest love was for her large extended family. She is lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Patricia, Adrienne and Elizabeth and their respective husbands, Stephen Sokolow, Donald Hendler and Andrew Kriegman, as well as her eleven grandchildren and twenty- two great-grandchildren. Together, Shirley and her husband of sixty-six years, Harold Leviton, built a family, a business and left an inspiring legacy for so many. She and Harold raised their children in Hewlett Harbor and Shirley was a vital part of the Hewlett community for more than seventy-two years. A voracious reader and true renaissance woman, Shirley will be remembered as an intelligent, elegant, loving, generous and kind woman. While raising her family, she immersed herself in community activities working to better the lives of children, the needy and the uneducated at local, national and international levels. Shirley was an early proponent of children's educational programs such as the Head Start program in the Five Towns. She joined the Peninsula Section of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) where her recognition of dedicated leadership led to her serving as National President from 1979-1983. She led major initiatives such as the NCJW Research Institute for Innovation in Education as well as served on the Board of the Hebrew University. Shirley was an advocate for improving health care and served as a Trustee of North Shore University Hospital (Northwell). Shirley played a vital role as an active member of the Board of Directors of the Leviton Manufacturing Company founded by her father-in- law Isidor, in 1906, and later run by her husband Harold. She frequently accompanied Harold, visiting the company's facilities, attending company and industry functions. She was beloved by employees and throughout the electrical industry. It is with tremendous gratitude that the family recognizes the extraordinary kind, loving, attentive people who cared for her throughout her later years. Funeral services will be held at 11am, January 6, 2019, at the Boulevard-Riverside Chapel, 1450 Broadway, Hewlett, NY 11557. The family will observe Shiva only that evening, Sunday, from 5pm - 9pm at the Leviton residence, 1312 Club Drive, Hewlett Harbor, NY, 11557. Memorial donations may be made in Shirley's memory to a charity of your choice. With Loving Memory, The Leviton Family.

I worked closely with Shirley when I started on the NCJW staff in 1981. I got to know her very well as I helped her write speeches (as did my husband). She was sharp, witty, kind, and generous (some might say to a fault!). I remember her giving each staff member (and there were many) a lovely gift at the holidays and inviting anyone who worked late to join her in her office for a drink when she was there. Her vision brought NCJW to new heights! We shared a birthday which delighted us both. May her memory be a blessing for all who knew her. Deepest condolences to family and friends.

To the Leviton Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
