Richard Simon

SIMON-Richard. The New York Philharmonic notes with grief and sadness the death of Richard Simon, a deeply valued member of the Philharmonic's violin section from 1965 to 1997, during the tenures of Music Directors Leonard Bernstein, George Szell, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta and Kurt Masur. He was the husband of Philharmonic violinist Fiona Simon. Mr. Simon, who received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, was a man of many interests and talents, including electronics and audio, cooking, and chamber music. During the 1960s he worked in physics and engineering in the NASA space project, and in recent years was appointed an associate fellow of the International College of Acupuncture and Electrotherapeutics. Over the years he studied French and Chinese cuisine, and had taken college courses in labor studies. He and his wife taught and performed at various New England and European festivals, and in recent years had completed an important program for the New York Associaton for New Americans to assist Russian immigrant string players. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Fiona, their son Michael, his children Daniel and Naomi, and to his entire family.
