PHYLLIS MELTZER Obituary

MELTZER--Phyllis. Phyllis Meltzer nee Gordon, of Coconut Creek, FL, died May 7, 2021, from complications of COVID. She was a month shy of her 98th birthday. Though twice vaccinated in January, she contracted the virus last week, while recovering from a fall in a Florida Rehab center. She died quickly and peacefully, in Hospice care, five days later. Born in Brooklyn, she married Peter Meltzer in 1945, and lived on the Upper Westside, before moving to Bayonne, NJ, two years later, where they lived for 60 years before retiring to Florida. They celebrated 75 years together, before his death in 2017. She is survived by her son, Steven (Phyllis); daughter, Linda Drogin (Jeffrey); grandchildren, Abbey Weiss (David); Lee Meltzer (Melissa Shakun); and cherished great-grandchildren, Isla and Milo Weiss. Phyllis lived a life of purpose, substance and joy. She was involved in many charitable activities, particularly those benefiting the Jewish community, both in Bayonne and Coconut Creek. She adored the theater, books, museums and people-watching, but mostly, she loved to laugh. Her compassion, intelligence, kindness, optimism, vibrancy touched so many, and though she was almost 98, her death shocked and saddened many. Graveside services will be held May 11, 2021 at United Hebrew Cemetery, 122 Arthur Kill Rd., Staten Island, NY. Further information is available from Gutterman Brothers Funeral Directors, 201-436-7800. Donations in her memory may be made to Hadassah.org or Hadassah Foundation.
