Let us continue to praise the life of Professor Herb Ershkowitz and his contributions to our world. Herb was my teacher and advisor at Temple University, a wise counsel with a depth of understanding on the human condition and the rare gift of calming, caring interaction. He simply made things better. He monitored my development in grad school, encouraged my dissertation stepping in at the right moments to encourage research, writing and at the same time demand excellence. My book is now out, and Herb is naturally acknowledged in its preface. I wish Professor Ershkowitz was with us now, working with students, and helping explain our complex and dangerous world.

I was Herb's graduate student at Temple. He helped me find my way in the discipline, guided my research, made me feel like I belonged. I traveled to Italy and Ireland for research; Herb insisted on that level of archival work for my dissertation. My book comes out July 16, 2021, "The Philadelphia Irish: Nation, Culture and the Rise of a Gaelic Public Sphere," (Rutgers Univ Press). Herb is prominently featured in the acknowledgments. Herb was a fine historian and teacher to many, always fierce in his demand for the truth and gentle in his caring for his students. He was ever ready with a good story that enlivened past and present, and a lunchtime conversation with Herb was sure to delight with wit and wisdom. He loved this region and helped us understand it with his writing and his service. We will miss him, but won't forget him. Thanks, Herb, for all you taught us about history, life, and living.-- Randall Miller
