Tony was a fine linguist who has influenced my own research considerably. I remember the moments we shared, in Stuttgart, Ottawa, Ghent, at conferences and in restaurants, and I will remember him as a scholar of rare quality. My deepest condolences to the family.

I remember Tony as a radical at Harvard, then PLP at MIT, and his deep and humane marxism. And then I admired Tony for bringing his commitment to formal linguistics to historical linguistics while doing original theoretical work at UPenn, and finally after years of casual acquaintance we discovered our common roots in the Jewish community
around Berlin and Leipzig---and all his other qualities seem to fall into place. A special person. Generous, lively, funny, and I wish I had known him better. Condolences to his family---I loved hearing his stories about children and grandchildren. Tom Roeper
