MARJORIE VON STADE Obituary
von STADE--Marjorie.
Marjorie Jean Mueller von Stade passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan 14, 2018 in her home in Spring Island, SC. She had just celebrated her 87th birthday the week before, surrounded with family and friends. For several years she struggled with Parkinson's, but never complained, was always thoughtful of others, and forever cheerful and positive. Her enthusiasm for life, family and friends, was punctuated by her distinctive laugh and great sense of humor, which never failed her. Marjorie graduated from John Burroughs School, in Clayton, MO in 1948, where she was a swimming and diving champion. She attended Smith College from 1948 till 1950, when she married Philip von Stade and dove into the busy life of wife and mother on Long Island, NY, while still finding time to get her BA in Biology in 1970 and her Masters in Marine Science from LIU/CW Post College in 1978. She was a director of the Cold Spring Harbor Labs Association and a friend, supporter and trustee of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, where her curiosity and contagious enthusiasm were ever- appreciated. One of her highlight-reel moments was a 1992 trip in the Alvin, a deep- sea submersible which took her to the ocean floor more than a mile below the surface, off the coast of California. For most of her adult life, Marjorie was active with Planned Parenthood, and was honored for over 40 years of service in 1999. She also served for a number of years as the head of development for Glen Cove Hospital, in Glen Cove, NY. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, bridge, and 'gabbing' with her many friends in New York, Maine and South Carolina. Her greatest pleasure in life came from spending time outdoors with her family - her husband Philip, to whom she was married for 53 years; and five active kids and their families, including ten grandkids, three great-grandkids and numerous pets. She is survived by her five children: Philip and his wife, MaryAnne of Portland, ME, Robert and his wife, Elizabeth Munson, of Old Brookville, NY; Richard and his wife, Kimberly, of Havanah, FL; Kathryne (Cappy) and her husband, Brett Lewis, of Shelburne, VT, and Skiddy and his wife, Elizabeth, of Scarborough, ME; as well as ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in 2004 by her husband of 53 years, Philip R. von Stade, and her brother, Robert Mueller of Scottsdale, AZ, in 2003. A memorial service will be held in Long Island in the late Spring. Details to be announced. Donations in her memory may be made to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Development Office, MS#40, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 266 Woods Hole Road, Woods Hole, MA 02543-1050 and to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Development Office - Luke Building 1, Bungtown Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724 and to Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, 540 Fulton Ave., Hempstead, NY 11550.
