LOIS MAZZITELLI Obituary
The Partners of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), together with the firm's colleagues, mourn the loss of Lois Mazzitelli, who died on Saturday, and extend their deepest sympathy to her family. Lois joined SOM in 1986, after eight years in the Urban Design Group and Manhattan Office of the New York Department of City Planning and brought to SOM a varied background in architecture, planning and urban design. Lois was an expert on zoning and public review procedures, and made an invaluable contribution to a wide range of complex, urban projects, including Time Warner Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Tribeca Bridge at Battery Park City, and Chase Financial Services Center at Metrotech, to name a few. Beyond her professionalism, we remember her as a fierce advocate for, and devoted citizen of, cities, particularly New York City, as well as a beloved team member and wonderful collaborator. Lois was also actively involved in civic endeavors including the Municipal Art Society and the American Planning Association. Even after her illness forced her to leave the workforce, she remained a presence at our firm and was a colleague and friend to many. We will miss her.

The thing about Lois that I will remember most fondly is how she could cut to the heart of a matter with a wicked, dead-pan humor. She made me laugh - sometimes ruefully, sometimes uproariously, sometimes both at the same time. God rest her beautiful soul.

I am so sorry for your loss. Reading her Obituary was an inspiration. I never had the pleasure of meeting Lois, but reading about her gave me the sense of a person who made the most of the time she had and gave back to those around her.
