CARMICHAEL-Joel. 90. Writer, editor, linguist, translator and lecturer died at home on January 27th. Mr. Carmichael edited Midstream magazine and wrote numerous books on the origins of Christianity, Islam, and Anti-Semitism, and on Marxism and Russian history. His 1960 translation of Tolstoy's ``Anna Karenina'' is widely read. Mr. Carmichael's brothers, Eleazar and David Lipsky, predeceased him. He is survived by his children, Louis David Carmichael (and wife Constance), Isabella Sarah Carmichael, and Deborah Jael Margaret Carmichael, and grandchildren James, Emily, and Felicity. There will be a memorial service in the spring in Amagansett NY.
