Alice Benston Obituary

1931 - 2021
Alice Naomi Benston, beloved wife of the late George Benston, treasured mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, cherished sister, and adored aunt died peacefully on Friday, January 29 at the age of 89.

.....Dr. Benston retired from Emory University where she was the first full-time Chair of Theater Studies and Film. She was instrumental in forming the Playwriting Center of Theater Emory and Sister City Playwrights, both of which got national recognition. She dramaturged over 30 new plays that went on to full productions at Theaters across the USA and Europe including work by Wole Soyinka, Donzaleigh Abernathy, Elizabeth Wong, and Athol Fugard. She received Emory's Crystal Apple Award for excellence in teaching and mentoring.

.....Earlier, with two co-deans, she created the Graduate School's Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunity (TATTO) program   She championed the Beckett Letter Project.

.....A loyal New Yorker during her early and later years, Dr. Benston was educated in NYC public schools, Queens College, and Emory University, earning her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Emory's Institute of Liberal Arts, after which she entered on a distinguished career as a teacher, scholar, senior administrator, and academic leader at Northwestern University (where she was the first female tenured there since 1870), the University of Chicago (where she formed lifelong bonds with some of her students), the Eastman School of Music, the University of Rochester, and Emory University.

.....At Eastman School of Music, she became the head of the Humanities program, with joint appointments to the Comparative Literature in the university's College of Arts and Sciences.  During her tenure there she reconstructed and revitalized the curriculum to bring more of the Arts and Literature into the lives of those dedicated musicians.  She then chaired Rochester's Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics.  In that role, she also saved the Women's Study program and created the Susan B Anthony Chair.

.....She was an extraordinarily luminous figure for family, friends, colleagues, and students alike, uplifting their lives with her intellectual vibrancy and creativity, and equally with her graciousness and generosity.  Exceptional as her professional achievements were, her greatest accomplishments could be seen in the innumerable lives she enriched and in the wondrous, inspirational marriage that she enjoyed with George for over half a century.  She will be much missed but always remembered with gratitude and love.

Since we lived on the same apt floor, and I took care of her dear dog and cat, Dee Dee and Sophie, for 4 years, I miss Alice so much and feel the loss of my friend every time I pass her apt. She was a most lovely and interesting person...so kind to everyone.

I remember Alice from 1975 when she tried to help my 11 year old daughter learn to play the violin. I will miss her sweet spirit.

It was a pleasure meeting Alice, especially after hearing about her for years. Soon after we met, she welcomed me into her beautiful Manhattan home with hospitality and warmth and she conveyed a genuine interest in getting to know me. It is a pleasure to meet someone who communicates so well; it is a gift to be with someone who genuinely listens. Thank you, Alice! Peace!

The world lost an amazing, inspiring person. Our family lost its matriarch. There are no words.

I remember when I was young watching her repair a broken nail, amazed that it was both long again and perfectly red. To me in that moment she was the most glamorous person I ever met; that never changed.

I remember her Borscht. I remember her stuffing with actual chestnuts.

I remember all those little moments when she made me feel special. Being on opposite coasts did not allow us to spend enough time together but I will always cherish that time.

Alice and I lived on the same floor of our apartment building in Manhattan and have been friends for many years. Four years ago when she had an accident and broke her wrist, I started taking care of her beloved Bichon, Didi, and her cat, Sophie. During this time Alice and I would always talk 10-15 minutes each day. We talked about theatre, books and especially life. They were among the most interesting conversations I've ever had with another person. And she would always have excellent ideas for dealing with whatever was going on in my life. I adored Alice, Didi and Sophie and will miss them forever.

She was so generous with her time, intelligence and empathy. She never made anyone feel smaller, rather lifted us up with her insights and care in understanding the human condition. I had the thrill of seeing plays with her and George in London and NYC and the discussions after were many of the richest in my career. A great friend and inspiring mentor who will always be with me.In this Brave New Works photo, where she dramaturged for me at Theater Emory, you see her on the right with. some of the finest artists to emerge from Emory including Snehal who went on to YaleMFA in directing and runs a major theater in LA and Lauren, the most produced playwright in the USA the past 3 years whose play was overseen by Alice and published by Theater Emory press.Pros Chris Kayser and Steve Murray also in the photo.
