ANTHONY GOOCH Obituary

GOOCH--Anthony Cushing

("Tony"), born December 3, 1937, Amarillo, TX, died of complications from cancer at his home in Manhattan on January 24, 2017. Survived by wife Florence A. Davis, children Katherine (Michael) Gooch-Breault, Jennifer (George) Avery, Melissa Gooch, and Andrew Gooch (Karri Sevick), stepdaughters Rebecca Davis O'Brien (Evan Hepler-Smith) and Sarah Davis O'Brien, grandchildren Jacob Avery, Elizabeth Avery and Griffin Gooch-Breault. Also survived by his brother Robert's children, his cousin Sally Gooch Paynter, and their families. Predeceased by parents Cornelius and Sidney Crawford Gooch, brothers Robert and Crawford Gooch, and wives Elizabeth Ivanoff Gooch and Linda B. Klein. Tony grew up in Brazil, Tennessee, and Texas, lived in Belgium, France and Brazil as an adult, and capably spoke a number of languages. He held degrees from Sewanee: The University of the South (B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), where he served as a Trustee and Regent and was award the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, in 2014. He then went to the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, as a Fulbright Scholar (diploma in history). Tony was a Root-Tilden Scholar at New York University School of Law (LL.B., Order of the Coif, LL.M. in comparative law). He was in regular contact with his fellow "Roots", and was a dedicated supporter of NYU Law's outstanding public service programs. Following his retirement, Tony returned to school for a masters degree in international affairs at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs , where he co-founded the Microfinance Working Group. Tony spent his entire career at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, working at various times in the Paris, Brussels, Rio de Janeiro, and New York offices. He remained close to his Cleary colleagues and friends to the end and always remembered with fondness and respect the partners who mentored him. He was a pioneer in the documentation of complex financial instruments, including swaps and derivatives, and co- authored books on this subject with his late wife Linda. After retiring from the practice of law, Tony devoted his time to a number of charities, as a director at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, a member of the Rockefeller University Council, a trustee of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, an informal advisor to law students at NYU, and as a volunteer editor and translator for Kiva.org. A memorial service in New York will be scheduled at a future date; interment private. Anyone wishing to make contributions in Tony's memory may consider any of the charities with which he was involved, but his family adds, with gratitude, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (to support research by Drs. Michael Morris and Matthew Hellman), and Weill Cornell Medicine Geriatrics and Palliative Care Department, att: Dr. Sharda Ramsaroop.
