BERNARD COHEN Obituary

COHEN--Bernard, MD. Mount Sinai Health System grieves the loss of Bernard Cohen, MD, a tenacious and pioneering researcher who was internationally known for his research on the brain and the vestibular system, a field of study that he helped establish. His work was aimed at understanding the neural basis for spatial orientation in humans and animals, on Earth and in space, with the goal of finding treatments for a wide range of disorders of vertigo and balance, including motion sickness and mal de debarquement syndrome, a condition marked by continuous rocking, swaying, and bobbing after sea voyages or other travel. His research was continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for 54 years. In 1985, NASA asked Dr. Cohen to help devise experiments with primates in an international space program collaboration and later with humans in a NASA Neurolab flight. This research led to the finding that the very weak gravity in space dramatically alters an essential reflex that is part of normal eye movements. One of the experimental devices, the Cosmos Rotator, earned enduring recognition when it became part of the Smithsonian Institution collection several years ago. Dr. Cohen earned his medical degree at New York University in 1954. He completed residencies in neurology at NYU-Bellevue Medical Center and in psychiatry at Hillside Hospital in Queens, and a fellowship in neurology at Columbia University. He then joined The Mount Sinai Hospital, where he spent his entire career, receiving the Morris B. Bender Endowed Chair in Neurology in 1976. As Professor Emeritus since 2017, he remained very active, organizing and directing a course on vestibular contributions to health and disease in October 2019 that drew visiting faculty from around the world. His enduring passion for his work, his generous advice and mentorship, and the excitement he showed when making an unexpected discovery will be remembered by his many colleagues. Our deepest sympathies go to his three children, Alexander (Kim Allen) Cohen, Nathaniel (Sherry) Cohen, and Margaret Cohen, and his grandchildren, Samuel and Maxwell Klotz, Ari, Shaina, and Jonah Cohen, and Zachary Allen Cohen. Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mount Sinai Health System Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System Barbara G. Vickrey, MD, MPH, Henry P. and Georgette Goldschmidt Professor and Chair of Neurology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

Bernie, We hadn't known each other for very long but in that short time - well I hope you won't be insulted if I share that you were the grandfather/ father I never had. Thank you for all the wonderful stories about your life in New York, for introducing me to Rugalah and Borscht for the first time, from the story behind Wagner's opera, to teaching me about the vestibular system and Jewish history. I will miss visiting you on Sundays and the lunches we had together. I even learned how to make a few things that I hoped to share with you after covid was over. I may have found the answer to making the perfect bagel too. The little tree you gave me is alive and well, despite my fears for it's life in my dark apartment, especially after you told me that you considered it am extension of your wife's soul. I will miss you tremendously. As an introvert I am in awe of your tireless enthusiasm for learning, people and life. Even the energy you put into planning events astounded me. It has been such a great honour to know you. I hope this message finds your family doing well. I will miss you greatly and always be reminded of you when I have Rugalah and water Phoebe. Love, Caroline

I knew Bernard Cohen for over half a century, and had the privilege of working for him throughout most of those memorable years. I will always cherish his memory and the times we spent together at the lab, his home, on social occasions and abroad. And I will forever be very grateful to him for aiding me in a special hour of need. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Bernie was a hero to me and I could not have had a better boss for over 10 years. He was an amazing person with the best smile and personality of anyone on this planet. I have so many things I could say and they are all just amazing. I went to Moscow with his research team twice and he was universally respected on all ends of the world. What a great man.
