Betty Ajay

AJAY--Betty, on December 7, 2007, died at her home in Connecticut. She was 89 years old. Mrs. Ajay was born in Burlingame, CA in 1918, the daughter of Walter and Evangeline Raymond. She had two brothers predeceased. Mrs. Ajay graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, her graduate work was done at Colombia. As a young woman she was employed as a research worker, a diamond cutter, and a model in NYC. Mrs. Ajay found her career in landscape design. She married Abe Ajay, the artist, in 1947. He died in 1998. They lived in an 18th-Century farmhouse in Bethel, CT, which they bought in 1950 and restored. Mrs. Ajay was very successful as a landscape designer and worked performing upscale projects in Westport and Greenwich, CT as well as Westchester County, NY, among others. They were considered excellent achievements. In 1970, McGraw-Hill Published, "Betty Ajay's Guide to Home Landscaping". She was especially gifted in the designing of beautiful stone walls and gardens. She loved her work and therefore excelled in it. She is survived by her daughter Robin, two stepsons Alex and Stephen Ajay, three granddaughters and a grandson, four great-grandchildren, and her niece and nephew.
