Bruno A. Boley (1924-2017) passed away peacefully February 11 in Providence RI. He will be missed by his son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter and great grandson. Bruno was born in Italy, migrated to the United States on the last sailing of the Queen Mary before the outbreak of World War II in 1939, obtained the B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from City College of New York and the Sc.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1946. He was a professor in Civil Engineering at Columbia University (1952-1968), headed the Cornell University Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics until 1972 and then was Dean of Engineering at Northwestern University until 1986. After his long scientific career, he devoted himself to historical pursuits culminating in the book "Wandering Through Europe: The Story of European Geographical Names" in 2008. He was a founding editor of the journal Mechanics Research Communications. His classic text "Theory of Thermal Stresses" (with Jerome Weiner) has educated countless generations of scientists. Among his many honors, he received the Worcester Reed Warner Medal in 1991 from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his outstanding contributions to the permanent literature of engineering. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1975.
