CARL ROUSE Obituary

ROUSE--Carl A., died on February 25, 2014 at his home in Princeton, NJ at the age of 87. Born in Youngstown, OH, he studied physics and math at Case Institute of Technology after serving in the Army Specialized Training Reserve. In 1956 he was the first African-American to earn his PhD in physics from Caltech. He worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he made contributions in atomic, plasma, and computational physics; he also worked at General Atomics for many years. A solar physicist at heart, he developed an alternative model of the sun that has led many astrophysicists to question the standard model. Mr. Rouse is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, and six grandchildren. Donations in his honor can be sent to the National Society of Black Physicists, The Carl Rouse Fellowship Memorial Funds, 3033 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 700, Arlington, VA 22201.

My sincerest condolences to Lorraine and the Rouse children. It is hard to lose a beloved part of the family. Carl will be missed. Up to the end, those who only knew him in Princeton found him kind and gentle. He was much more.
