CHARLES KINGSON Obituary

KINGSON--Charles I., 1938-2019. Charles Isaac Kingson (Charley) of New York City died peacefully on February 26, 2019 in the company of his wife and daughter. He was 80 years old and had spent his career as a tax lawyer. Born in New York City, he attended the Horace Mann School and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard College and Harvard Law School. A longtime partner at Willkie, Farr and Gallagher, he served as the Treasury Department's deputy international tax counsel under the Carter Administration, where he wrote the initial regulations under section 367 of the tax code, establishing rules for reorganizations and liquidations involving foreign corporations. A gifted pianist, conversationalist and thinker, he spent his later years teaching his craft at New York University Law School, Yale Law School, Penn Law School and Columbia Law School. He leaves his beloved wife, Nancy Sharf Kingson, and daughter, Jennifer A. Kingson, and two grandchildren, Valerie Kingson Bloom and Jeffrey Kingson Bloom.

He was a gentle and humble man, never one to talk down to a student, but commanded respect through the sheer brilliance of his mind. Let kindness and ethics be his legacy, even though we are not worthy.

I was a newly minted tax attorney at Willkie Farr & Gallagher (1983-1986) and had the great fortune to work with Mr. Kingson. His area of specialty, international tax, was a great mystery to me back then and his work whet my appetite to know more. Decades later I am specializing in US international tax, having practiced in Asia and now the Middle East. It was with great sadness I learned of his passing and send my deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Charley was an invaluable mentor and an inspiration to all in his professional orbit. Notwithstanding his stature in the industry, he was humble to a fault, and his wonderful sense of humor was often directed to poking fun at himself. He is sorely missed. Warmest thoughts and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

He was a friend of my older brother from their days at Horace Mann - and I remember him as being extraordinarily kind to a little sister, and as having a splendid sense of humor. Sincere condolences to the whole family.

That's a sad, unexpected shocker. He and I saw each other once in a while for a while, when I was at Cravath and he at Willkie Farr. then, as happens, we drifted apart. I had no idea he was a pianist (as was I). We laughed a lot together. All my condolences. Peter
