SKAGGS--Charles E. Award-winning book designer and graphic artist, born in Louisville, KY, December 7, 1917, died May 4 in Tacoma, WA. After early years in Chicago and Cincinnati, his career in the 40s, 50s and 60s centered on NYC and the publishing houses of Knopf (where he often collaborated with W.A. Dwiggins), Farrar Straus & Giroux, Doubleday, Simon & Schuster, Pocket Books, Macmillan, Limited Editions, and others. His designs received several AIGA Fifty Books awards. Survived by his wife of 79 years, Juanita (Allen) Skaggs, children Joyce (Dave) Brewster and David (Laura) Skaggs, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

I am so fortunate to have known Charles and Anita though it was only the last few years. His sense of humor was so fun to be around but learning of his accomplishments to me were astounding. His career in calligraphy is what drew me to him initially. The long term marriage and the love between them was inspirational too.
